B.M.O.C.: Best Manes On Campus - 2010-11

Colleges and universities, we're told, are all about getting an education. But let's be honest - they're also places for admiring women whose hairstyles are blossoming into their prime, and are well-prepared for a long day of studies and activities.

We believe some great heads of hair can be found on campuses, so this area has been dedicated to locating and displaying them since 2003. We want your nominations of the "best manes," perhaps at the college in your town or the one you attend. (And trust us from experience: the best styles do not always belong to the cheerleaders.)

SYRACUSE: ARI KASPROWICZ.

This sophomore from West Virginia is majoring in health education -- and she has good enough health to win state high school titles in distance running. A sideparted bob with bangs was great enough to reach her adopted home's City League finals. [Posted 5/17/11]

HAWAII: ASHLEE JIMENEZ.

She's won statewide student art contests for work with pen and ink. She can fly on the track, winning a state 400-meter title. And this sophomore all-academic team member with lush brunette hair won a runoff from the Honolulu City League tournament, holding off Brittany Hewitt 9-5 for our campus title. [Final 5/17/11]

DUQUESNE: LAURA AESCHBACHER.

A sophomore took a healthy head of long hair east from the Denver area to play lacrosse and major in business. Hair Fans were impressed enough to make her a division finalist in the Pittsburgh City League, and fourth overall. [Posted 5/1/11]

CREIGHTON: MARY McMULLAN.

A junior economics major from Iowa was part of an undefeated tennis doubles' team in 2010. Her sleek long blonde hair wasn't quite undefeated in the Omaha City League contest, but finishing tied for fourth isn't bad. [Posted 4/21/11]

ST. PETER'S: VANESSA VOGEL.

A freshman moved across the country from Phoenix to New Jersey, to play college tennis. Her long hair undoubtedly now faces serious challenges from wind, as opposed to sun and heat - but Hair Fans likely would root for this look to hold strongly. [Posted 4/7/11]

PALM BEACH ATLANTIC (FL): ALYSSA DeMONTE.

She's won awards for academic achievement, since transferring south from Gettysburg to major in psychology. But this junior from New Jersey also won quite an award from Hair Fans, who gave her long blonde waves the City League title in Palm Beach. [Posted 3/16/11]

BOSTON COLLEGE: MARY FOTHERGILL.

This junior who stayed close to home for college swims the butterfly, and soars above the crowd as an all-conference academic honor roll student. Her long blonde hair praised for being "very soft" and having "great body" dominated a six-way race. [Final 3/7/11]

(Second through sixth place: Manon Palandjian; Tsvetelina Dureva, Megan Hennessey tied; Michaela Morr, Cagla Sen tied.)

NEBRASKA-OMAHA: KATIE BECKER.

An aspiring lawyer who's majoring in psychology, this senior had a winning stretch to win a head-to-head race with fellow swimmer Lucy Zamecnik 18-16. One supporter admired Becker's strawberry-blonde color, while we wonder how well she can make the hair hold. [Final 2/5/11]

CLEARWATER CHRISTIAN (FL): ELISABETH ENNIS.

A Hair Fan insists we blew it, by not giving this senior volleyball player a Crown Award nomination for Best Hairstyle in Athletics. This elementary education major transferred from Campbell University, where she made the conference all-academic team. Too bad no one recommended her sleek long hair there. [Posted 1/7/11]

WICHITA STATE: TORRIE BROWN.

A first-year student from central Oklahoma has a softball scholarship, and with her National Honor Society membership probably could choose from many majors. Her brains with long auburn waves impressed Hair Fans so much that she not only unseated defending BMOC Jamie Hull, but became Wichita City League champion in the process. [Posted 12/29/10]

CARROLL (MT): SHELBY SWEENY.

A first-year pre-nursing major is impressing cross-country coaches by her running, and impressed Hair Fans for long hair with "thickness and sleakness." She outlasted Caitlin Tocci 16-10 in the final race. [Final 12/12/10]

(Third place: Catie Hanser.)

LOUISIANA-MONROE: KELSI CRAIN.

A junior in kinesiology staked her claim to hair fame during summer break. First she won the Miss Louisiana pageant, displaying ballet and fitness skill. Then she took an angled sidepart (both strengthened and softened with flared ends) through Super-Hair Wars as an undefeated champion, reaching the semifinal round. [Posted 11/18/10]

COLUMBUS STATE (GA): CASEY GOOGE.

We're told this first-year student had people buzzing during high school, because of a photo shoot which helped land her in a modeling contest. Her natural waves even get some interest when she ties them in a ponytail to be a softball catcher. [Posted 10/29/10]

ST. MARY'S - TEXAS: ALEXANDRA GARCIA.

A Hair Fan suggested this sophomore, who stayed at home for college after making the high school honor roll. An education/psychology major and softball player, she used daring thickness to overpower Geralyn Ayala and Stacey Moss in a three-way contest, winning 82 percent of the vote. [Final 10/11/10]

HARTFORD: LAUREN KAMENA.

A senior whose major is respiratory therapy, her thick medium-long hair takes the breath away from many Hair Fans. She defeated several local celebrities to win the Hartford City League competition -- and as a starting outfielder on the softball team with a history of running track, we think she's ready to take on all comers. [Posted 9/14/10]

NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE: KELSEY BURDICK.

A junior soccer player may not be settled on a major, but she apparently keeps short hair in line on the High Plains. She won a six-way contest, defeating cheerleader Hayley Luis 12-9 in the finals. [Final 9/6/10]

(Third through sixth place: Ashley Carroll, Ashley Strack tied; Stephanie Martin, Myka Storie tied.)
