The Ultimate 50
14. Betsy Stark
2024 Update
At last - a new photo of Betsy! Well, it's new to us. It was buried deep on X/Twitter, when she spoke at a George Washington University event for business students in April 2016. It's her same classic short style - but it may be the messiest we've ever seen it: a couple of small strips of bangs above her right eye, but then longer bangs barely staying out.
Well under the radar, Betsy began her own business in 2021. She calls herself "Executive Communications Coach" of Magistra Media LLC, based in New York. While she advises "highest-level" corporate leaders, her LinkedIn photo seems dated - and she has no website for the business at all. Is that good marketing? Maybe not, but it keeps her relatively private. And it keeps her hair officially undefeated here.

2022 Update
We tried. We really did. We searched social media from Facebook to TikTok. But we found nothing new on Betsy. Nothing at all.
We finally dared to take what you might consider the most obvious step. We emailed her employer asking for some kind of update. After almost a week, we had no response. Either Ogilvy doesn't trust us, doesn't think we're serious or... well, we don't know. But if Betsy emerges somewhere, we'll update this again. If you see her anywhere, please let us know.

2020 Update
Sorry - nothing to see here. And that's a sad, stunning shame. We searched high and low online, but found absolutely no new pictures of Betsy since 2018 - not even on her slim social media accounts. We know she led a federal workshop on brain research and the media in Washington in April 2019, still in her Ogilvy and Mather job. But brain doctors apparently don't have "hair brains" enough to take her picture.
We held a Cutting-Edge Hair News poll in late 2018, and Betsy's hair was judged the best of all remaining Ultimate 50 unbeatens. We put her on our Top Ten Tresses list in response. But is she satisfied with that, and hiding out? We hope not. That could hurt her Mancrushes ranking - at a place where you can see several photos of Betsy's hair at her best. (Including a couple which appear to be ours.)

2018 Update
Betsy remains at Ogilvy and Mather, and only occasionally steps out from the office before a camera. One of those moments was in May, when FIS (a client, we presume) held a 50th anniversary conference. Three short clips on YouTube show Stark's style quite short, compared with the ABC years - stopping above her chin. But the right side is riskier, with little sign of bangs and an angle that could be dangerous on a windy day. She's been wise not to show any such moments, and we must conclude the "Super-Stark" is still perfect.
This Director of "Media Strategy" surprises us by how little she uses social media. Her Twitter and Facebook feeds remain empty. And she has an Instagram account consisting of a single four-year-old profile picture. Is Betsy trying to tell us these approaches are simply a fad?

2016 Update
Betsy marks five years with Ogilvy and Mather this year - now as "Managing Director of Content and Media Strategy." That title has made her public appearances rare. We thank Wireimage and Getty Images for this photo from an October New York "gala." It indicates Betsy's kept the well-rounded short bob that's captured our attention for years. One or two loose bangs are not much of a flaw at all.
We also found this wonderful extreme close-up look at Stark's vulnerable yet perfect right side, from a 2010 PBS report. The hold looks effortless. But strangely, Stark's personal media strategy does not seem to include social media accounts. She has a Facebook page and a Twitter account, but has never posted to them publicly. Would someone please tell her it's 2016 - and we're still interested in her?

2014 Update
Betsy remains with Ogilvy in a semi-executive role. She seems to be directing videos more than she appears on-camera. So this 2012 chat about the public relations business is a rare appearance - and it shows her classic short sideparted style, still nice and solidly in line.
Our search for updates led us to a 2010 report Betsy did for the PBS NewsHour. It was a breezy October day in Canton, Ohio, giving her Super-Hair an unusual wind test. The breeze pushed her right side close to her eye. But it didn't crack there...
...even though the wind was strong enough at times to push all her hair forward.
An even more unusual test came when Betsy visited a "haunted house." Someone jumped out and scared her in an alcove! She reacted with a 180-degree quick turn, and a nearby mirror showed this look in mid-turn. Is her "vulnerable" right side loose?
Perhaps so! As the turn continues, a strip of a hair looks like it's bending in! Is it in Betsy's eye?
Here's the main camera view at the end of the turn. Well, IS that hair in Betsy's eye?? It's certainly close....
....so close that we zoom in on her right eye. From that angle, it's arguable. We're very reluctant to declare an Ultimate hairstyle defeated based on unclear evidence. Watch the report for yourself, then let us know what you think. It certainly would be the narrowest escape Stark's had - if she did.

2012 Update
Betsy bounced back from her ABC News dismissal in early 2012, by joining the
Ogilvy public relations firm. She's made a few appearances on camera since then, but not many. This photo from a
Quinnipiac University video shows her classic short sidepart of recent years remains virtually unchanged. The hair actually
flexes at one point in the clip. But it went back in line - perfectly, of course.
If Betsy's going to be office-bound most of the time, her hair reputation isn't likely to change. She has a Facebook account, but it looked bare-bones when we checked it and lacked photos. Hair Fans might want to check it often to see if the "Stark survivor" (compared with Lisa) makes any adjustments.

2010 Update
Here's how Betsy's Super-Hair looked in one of her last public appearances, in January
2010. Her style may not be quite so wide, but it was basically unchanged from the last several years -- and the
shoulder-length rounded sidepart remained as perfect as ever. But that wasn't good enough for ABC News, as the business
correspondent who reported on "The Great Recession" became a victim of it in April. In other words, she was laid off.
Betsy resurfaced in early October, hosting an economic forum sponsored by "The Fiscal Times." This
picture from a Media Bistro "wide-angle shot" shows what appears to still be Stark's classic look. It's likely the same way
when she occasionally is a guest on public radio's On Point -- but we have no in-studio photos of that. To borrow from
Betsy's farewell e-mail to ABC staffers, we hope she doesn't become a stranger.

2008 Update
After years with the same consistent look, Betsy has made a
change in her style in recent months. This vid-cap from July shows the bangs have been grown out -- and that suddenly
increases the risk factor for her hair. There's no buffer if the wind blows.
And a few evenings earlier, the right side of Betsy's style appeared a bit
weak. She's probably counting on spray more than ever, to keep the all-around look in place. Yet Betsy's hair remains
strongly undefeated - and likely still capable of outsmarting any attempts to bring it down. For a good look at how her
Super-Hair has been adjusted, check the photos made available by ABC's media relations department.

2006 Update
If there's a more consistent style on our Ultimate list, we
challenge you to tell us which one it is. Betsy keeps the helmet look consistent day by day, and keeps it quite precise on a
consistent basis as well. This is hair that simply holds solidly, and at least 99 percent of the time is flawless. If it isn't broken,
she doesn't need to fix it.
This updated "official" photo for ABC News actually shows a bit of a modification -- as the hair
seems sculpted and square on Betsy's left side. That side remains tucked behind the ear securely, as always. We don't recall
that side ever off the ear, or out of position.
At least we've found a bit of a gallery of Betsy's hair, from the 2005 Business News Emmy awards. Search for those awards at the web site of photographer Bryan Brown.

2004 Update
The toughest outdoor challenge Betsy has faced in some time occurred in 2004, with
the Martha Stewart trial. But she proved she has Super-Hair by rising to the challenge. While wind seemed to blow her
bangs back off the forehead, she added what some news anchors call "scoops" on the side - extra curl, sprayed into
ultra-solid position.
Then came the summer day when she was invited to a White House briefing. It
apparently ended just before news time - and Betsy's hair looked as unprepared as we've ever seen it. The hair on her right
side was obviously out of line, but no wind was blowing to put her style in danger. She's obviously more concerned about the
left side, however, because that's clearly tucked in at all times. We've never seen a reporter so conscious of that "weak side"
of a sidepart.
This unusual view shows a more perfect picture, at the end of a report in the studio.
This is a style well-rounded and precisely in line.
And we thank the city of Kirksville, Missouri for providing this photo of Betsy doing actual field
reporting in January 2004. (It's the only place besides ABC News with a new picture at all.) Here her hair seems actually
loose on both sides, with seemingly no concern of the camera catching a messed-up moment.
Betsy's still at her best, with a well-cared for style which is prepared for any trouble - well worthy of her ranking.

2002 Update
One trait we've noticed of the top celebrity hairstyles is their consistency day after day. Betsy's become
an excellent example of that. The light bangs stay wherever she places them. And they're trimmed well enough so that even
when the long hair is brushed forward a bit, its stretch toward the eyes always falls about an inch short.
(Our only complaint about this perfect cap is a small personal preference. Does she have to tuck hair behind her left ear? It doesn't look symmetrical to us -- and we think the hair would hold well without it.)
Perhaps Betsy's style is too consistent for some, because she also seems lacking in online fans. (Admittedly, she isn't seen outside the studio much testing her hair's strength.) You'll have to settle for watching her reports on the ABC News web site - and we understand they're charging for views now.
