The 15th Annual Crown Awards
Super-Hair's biggest event of the year brought dozens of candidates, then hundreds of votes from Hair Fans over several weeks. And on 12 March, we announced the Crown Awards winners for the best hair of 2014. Thanks for everyone who joined in the process, and congratulations to those who wear the Crowns!
BEST SHORT HAIR: FARAH FATH, JANE LEVY (tie).
The one-time “soap star” turned poker player Fath came from behind in the final days of voting, and shares a Crown with the star of Suburgatory.
Fath and Little 29 percent, Carmen Dominicci 15%, Dylan Dreyer 15%, Ashleigh Banfield 12%.
BEST LONG HAIR: VICTORIA AZARENKA.
Belarus' biggest name in tennis wins this big prize for the third year in a row, something only Bonnie Bernstein has done before.
Azarenka 36 percent, Alison Brie 25%, Rebecca Gayheart 22%, Selena Gomez 13%, Leah Renee 5%.
BEST CURLS: REBECCA GAYHEART.
Three past Crown winners were part of our “Curl Clash.” An actress who last won in 2007 wound up on top, praised by a voter for making “every day.... a good hair day.”
Gayheart 34 percent, Daniela Ganoza 24%, Alyson Footer 21%, Jaymee Sire 16%, Nathalie Emmanuel 5%.
BEST BANGS: TAYLOR SWIFT.
She's come a long way from those long curls – and a singer who may have brought back side-swept bangs “shook off” two champions of this category.
Swift 44 percent, Paula Creamer 28%, Jenny Lewis 14%, Zooey Deschanel 6%, Hana Mae Lee 3%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE ON TELEVISION: ALISON BRIE.
A hard-working student on Community had to battle hard to defeat a fellow sit-com star. “Her hair really suits her,” one supporter wrote.
Brie 35 percent, Beth Behrs 33%, Zooey Deschanel 20 percent, Wendi McLendon-Covey 6%, Gina Rodriguez 6%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN A MOVIE: ELIZABETH BANKS.
An actress in Hunger Games movies wins this award for playing a TV reporter in the comedy Walk of Shame.
Banks 41 percent, Rosamund Pike 24%, Rachel Melvin 17%, Gugu Mbatha-Raw 11%, Tina Fey 7%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN MUSIC: ORIANTHI PANGARIS.
The Australian rock guitarist with peek-a-boo bangs (and no last name on stage) emerged from a tight deadlock with a pop star, gaining the critical final vote.
Pangaris 32 percent, Ariana Grande 30%, Selena Gomez 18%, Rita Ora 13%, Iggy Azalea 7%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN ATHLETICS: SARAH BACKMAN.
In what some might call a surprise, a champion arm wrestler from Sweden who's moving to the WWE pinned down a victory over “Vika.” One admirer called her “a body-building Rapunzel.”
Bachman 34 percent, Victoria Azarenka 26%, Paula Creamer 22%, Summer Rae 12%, Eugenie Bouchard 7%.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: MARY CAMERON ROGERS.
Even though the Significance Series was still on the production board, this actress's long hair dominated a field which includes a Golden Globe winner and Top Ten Tresses member.
Rogers 44 percent, Gina Rodriguez 20%, Olivia Sterns 20%, Traci Stumpf 15%, Ana Nogueira 2%.
All these beautiful winners stand out in their own way. We'll be talking about their hair on blog posts, conference call services
and social media for years to come. Congratulations ladies for some seriously stellar hair!
BEST BLONDE: VICTORIA AZARENKA.
A huge crowd came out for the tennis star in Week 1 to earn her a second Crown. She wins the Blonde prize for the second year in a row and her ninth all-time Crown by holding off a rising star at ESPN.
Azarenka 41 percent, Samantha Ponder 32%, Kim Matula 13%, Kelly Cass 11%, Heidi Scerbo 3%.
BEST BRUNETTE: ALISON BRIE, ZOOEY DESCHANEL (tie).
A bruising “brunette brawl” wound up in a draw, making the sit-com total Community two Crowns and New Girl one.
Brie and Deschanel 29 percent, Holly Sonders 18%, Kyle Richards 14%, Selena Gomez 10%.
BEST REDHEAD: KAREN GILLAN.
The sit-com Selfie only lasted a few weeks, but the perfect styles displayed by this actress left Hair Fans “thrillin'”, as a voter rhymed it. A big comeback by an original Crown champ fell short.
Gillan 41 percent, Debra Messing 27%, Rachel Nichols 15%, Christina Hendricks 12%, Albany Irvin 5%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN JOURNALISM: JACKI JING.
She was shown the door in Cincinnati in August, yet finds Crown success after working only a few months for WGNO-TV in New Orleans. She keeps this award in the state of Louisiana.
Jing 36 percent, Betty Nguyen 30%, Molly Line 21%, Olivia Sterns 13%.
MAKEOVER OF THE YEAR: NASIM PEDRAD.
She added bangs to her great long hair after leaving Saturday Night Live for the sit-com Mulaney. That brought this female comic her first Crown since 2009.
Pedrad 38 percent, Dana Perino 23%, Sharyn Alfonsi 20%, Jane Levy 14%, Olga Kurylenko 5%.
BEST HAIR IN SCIENCE/METEOROLOGY: KAIT PARKER.
The Weather Channel has found another meteorologist who's also a hairstyle star. She unseated last year's Crown winner, who dropped to third place.
Parker 43 percent, Dylan Dreyer 29%, Kelly Cass 13%, Jennifer Gray 8%, Bonnie Schneider 8%.
BEST HAIR IN GOVERNMENT/POLITICS: SAIRA BLAIR.
She surprised the political world by winning election to the West Virginia House of Delegates at age 18. Now she becomes one of our youngest-ever Crown winners.
Blair 44 percent, Alison Lundergan Grimes 31%, Kathleen Kane 13%, Michele Bachmann 7%, Angela Gerekou 5%.
BEST HAIR IN SPORTS REPORTING: SAMANTHA PONDER.
An ESPN reporter who's married to an NFL quarterback, her blonde hair showed leadership skill despite a few grumblings about extensions.
Ponder 43 percent, Laura Okmin 30%, Rachel Nichols 18%, Cassidy Hubbarth 5%, Molly Qerim 4%.
SUPER-HAIR WARS CHAMPION HAIRSTYLE OF THE YEAR: ALEXANDRA GUERRERO.
She won the Miss Trujillo pageant in Venezuela, then failed to win the national title. Yet this model proved her country has depth in hair beauty by winning five matches with an average winning margin of almost 70 percent.
