Joan Lunden

BORN: 7/19/50, Fair Oaks, CA

INDUCTED: 2016, 80-percent majority

While many women in the 1980s and '90s struggled to get their hair in shape at the start of the day, they could turn on TV to see a woman whose style was frequently flawless. Joan Lunden co-hosted Good Morning America for 17 years, and led style trends for short blonde hair far beyond that.

Lunden transitioned to ABC from its New York affiliate. This WABC-TV evening news vidcap from 1976 shows hair on the long side for her - enough to need some flipped curl at the ends. Her best-known styles with ABC had bangs, and often included flipped layers with a hot iron sizzling them into perfect position.

In her 1986 book Good Morning, I'm Joan Lunden, she credited a stylist named Robert for getting her hair ready for live TV. But she admitted doing the hair herself while on long overseas trips - sometimes with hot rollers. It took a strong windy day in any location for her hair to be shoved out of place and into her face.

Lunden sadly lost all her hair to cancer treatment in 2014. While we chose not to include pictures of that here, Lunden dared to appear on a national magazine cover with a bald head. As she fights a deadly disease, Hair Fans honor her for having styles that always have fought to stay in place - whether against the elements or an early alarm.
