August 2016: Erin Buchanan, Best Short Hair 2015
Do some places have more Super-Hair than others? The answer may depend on where you live and what you see. Over the years, we've learned that the "Ark-La-Tex" area of the U.S. South either has a lot of great hair, a lot of Hair Fans or both. Several entries from Shreveport-Texarkana have won Super-Hair Wars matches - and a couple have gone all the way to win Crown Awards:
ERIN BUCHANAN captured one of those Crowns in 2015 - sharing the Best Short Hair title with Dylan Dreyer. That followed a Super-Hair Wars season in which she reached the semifinals and dominated eventual Crown winner Betty Liu.
Buchanan is a Bossier City, Louisiana native who covers news stories in her home area for KTBS-TV. She agreed to answer email questions from us, as we noticed her growing out her award-winning hair a bit...
SUPER-HAIR: How would you describe your hair and your current style?
ERIN BUCHANAN: I guess you'd describe my style as a long bob. All I know is I try to keep it fairly short because I don't have the time or patience for long hair (anymore). :)
S-H: What do you like most about your hair? (Is there anything you dislike about it?)
EB: I used to HATE having red hair as a kid but now I love it. It's unique and stands out and in the business I work in, that's important. I have a love/hate relationship with how thick my hair is, but I'd wouldn't change it!
S-H: Were you surprised to find out you shared the Crown Award for Best Short Hair with Dylan Dreyer?
EB: I was surprised to find out I was in the competition at all! Haha. A former colleague won in the past so I knew the competition was fierce. ;)
S-H: We know from our Hair Fans that the Shreveport area has a lot of great hairstyles - espcially on TV. Do you agree - and why do you think that would be the case?
EB: For the most part, I agree. The south is famous for women having huge hair. And if you can rock it, I say go for it!
S-H: Have you always kept your hair short? What's the longest style you ever had?
EB: I've had every hair length you can possibly imagine. All the way down my back, shoulder length, a short pixie style and everything in between. I also bleached it blonde once but I learned from that mistake. Lol.
S-H: Do you use any special products (spray, gel, etc.) to keep your hair looking sharp?
EB: I don't wash my hair everyday. It's too dry - plus it just doesn't need it. I generally wash my hair every other day, and put a smoothing serum on it before I blow dry.
S-H: What's the biggest challenge you face, in keeping your hair in place?
EB: The humidity in Louisiana!!! It's a hair's worst nightmare. So sometimes I'll scrunch with mouse and hairspray if I know I'm going to be outside for a long period of time.
S-H: We couldn't find any pictures with your hair down across your eyes. Does that ever happen - and if it does, how did it happen?
EB: For tv, I keep my hair out of my eyes and face. Which means I keep my bangs cut short and styled to the side.
S-H: What advice would you give someone who wanted to develop Super-Hair, such as a style like yours?
EB: Play to your hair's strengths! And don't be afraid to try new styles - ever. Sometimes that's the boost of confidence you need, a change in hairstyle.
S-H: Who would you consider to have the best head of hair you’ve seen -- in the ArkLaTex or otherwise?
EB: That's a tough one. I'm going to say any woman who can rock a super short style gets a hand clap from me. I think it exudes confidence because often the mentality is that women have to keep a longer style. But that's simply not true.
S-H: You vs. Dylan Dreyer - both with your hair at its best. Who wins a Super-Hair War, and why?
EB: Dylan's obviously doing something right. I love her style but if there's one thing I know - it's good hair. So I'd give her a run for her money in the hair department. ;)
CONCLUSION: By and large, our Hair Fans "know... good hair," too. And they've brought us a great success story in Erin. She wears her hair close to collapse at times, but she clearly has the knowledge of how to keep it in place and out of her eyes.
Buchanan's Twitter profile is a simple one: "Lover. Fighter. Sleeper." When it comes to maintaining Super-Hair, we consider those first two a tremendous combination. We commend Erin for it - and invite you to offer us hair that's better, whether you find it in Shreveport or somewhere else.
