May 2006: Mid-Length Masterpieces, Page 3

TARA MILLER is a young TV sports reporter in Georgia, who happened to come to our attention as we prepared this profile.

ADVANTAGES: Good curl at the ends, plus teasing (possibly supported by spray) around the forehead which provides good room for maneuverability. The lines of hair are precise, yet soft instead of forced.

DISADVANTAGES: Nothing major. Does this hair have the body to match McDonald? The extra spacing could make up for that. Her only other weakness might be a lack of experience, but she'll gain that with time. We're definitely getting closer to our champion here.

This unnamed model appeared in an Ebony magazine photo feature on great hairstyles -- and does she ever display one. The caption says a "lion's mane of hair.... brushed carefully to show extra thickness falls gracefully around the shoulders."

ADVANTAGES: Thicker is better, we say. All that curl at the shoulders -- better still. And there's a touch of back-combing, to move hair off the face.

DISADVANTAGES: The only one belongs to us -- that we have no front view of this style for a fair comparison. But based on this photo, we think this woman would give McDonald a Super-Hair level fight to the finish.

LISA SYLVESTER brings us back to CNN -- and to the woman we say has the best mid-length style of all nowadays.

She can add curl as she wishes at the ends, but relies on teasing and spraying around the crown. The hair has to go a good distance to collapse in her eyes, and she precisely prepares it so it seldom moves out of position. The little extras would give her the edge over all the others we've shown you - even the woman who hasn't seen her style collapse in a decade.

SUMMARY: Please don't get the wrong idea -- we believe when they're at their best, all these mid-length styles are "masterpieces." They seem to drip with eye-catching and jaw-dropping beauty. Our point is that while they all have similar looks, they achieve their beauty and keep the look strong in slightly different ways.

However you prepare the cut to make it sharp, you can't go wrong with hair like this. We'd enjoy your thoughts -- which of these styles is your favorite, and why? (And did we miss a similar style, that's even better than these?)
