December 2006: The Do's of Diana, Page 3

MAY 1997: Diana displays this style on a tour of Africa. It's quite trimmed down from earlier years, with clearly-defined bangs. But the right side of the style still is combed off the face, and probably sprayed -- even though we're not sure it would fall that far forward, anyway.

AUGUST 30, 1997: The last recorded picture of the princess during her life, from a Paris hotel surveillance camera. We think it's the same style as the one above, only from the opposite side. There may be some round-brushing used to turn the hair back - and it's probably necessary, as that side looks long enough to hit her eyes.

A similar look is displayed on the front page of several British tabloids, when the "Stevens Report" into her death is released in late 2006. The hair on the sides actually appears long enough to put behind her ears, if necessary -- and we vaguely recall seeing her doing that on occasion.

SUMMARY: Princess Diana was a public figure for about 17 years - and while her basic hairstyle never really changed, she made adjustments to it with the times. It could be longer or shorter, with bangs or without, risky enough to collapse or too tightly trimmed to do so. Yet time after time, her hair looked as attractive as you'd expect someone "royal" to be. But for the one windblown moment we mentioned on page 1, Diana probably would have ranked in the top tier of our Ultimate 50 -- and it's no wonder some women still want to emulate her styles, years after her death.
