Cup of the Americas

U.S.A. All the Way!

Bonnie Bernstein's march to victory for the United States in the inaugural Cup of the Americas proved again she is the grand champion of the Super-Hair web site. She's been so dominant that you may have lost track of all the matches she's won -- so here's a record of her amazing success against a variety of challengers:

SUPER-HAIR WARS 2002:

ROUND 9: Kristin Davis, 240-20 (92%)

ROUND 10: Janet Jackson, 428-7 (98%)

ROUND 11: Jill Arrington, 2147-1353 (61%)

A surreal match marked by the web site going down, a poll not working properly and complaints of "auto-repeat" voting. Calls for poll restrictions are born from this.

PLAYOFF QUARTERFINALS: Kelly Packard, 265-57 (82%)

PLAYOFF SEMIFINALS: Dorothy Lucey, 230-34 (87%)

PLAYOFF FINALS: Rudi Bakhtiar, 5703-1012 (85%)

A classic battle, in which Bernstein trails noticeably for the first time yet roars back with a vengeance. Widespread bloc voting leads to introduction of poll filters.

CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS II: Dena Doster, 84-17 (83%)

HAIR FAN'S HALL OF FAME 2002

Inducted, 268-101 (73% majority)

2002 CROWN AWARDS:

BEST LONG HAIR - 50% to Faith Hill's 19%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE ON TELEVISION - 87% to Norah O'Donnell's 11%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN JOURNALISM - 56% to Rudi Bakhtiar's 18%.

BEST BRUNETTE - 61% to Norah O'Donnell's 16%.

With an added award as Super-Hair Wars champion, Bernstein wins a record five Crowns.

2003 CUP OF THE AMERICAS:

U.S. QUALIFYING QUARTERFINALS: Sue Bird, 123-6 (95%)

QUALIFYING SEMIFINALS: Tiffani Thiessen, 333-279 (54%)

Bernstein's closest call yet, barely escaping in the final days of voting. One critic writes a lack of voting filters saved her from finally falling.

QUALIFYING FINALS: Sasha Cohen, 74-15 (83%)

MATCH 1: Gisele Bundchen (Brazil), 79-11

MATCH 2: Shakira (Colombia), 84-15

MATCH 3: Marianela Mendoza (Nicaragua), 70-15

MATCH 4: Marcia MacMillan (Canada), 55-1

SEMIFINALS: Daisy Fuentes (Cuba), 98-39

FINALS: Isis Casalduc (Puerto Rico), 82-35

SUPER-HAIR WARS CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS III

Liz Cho, 46-30 (61%)

Bernstein opponents are thrilled when Cho leads 10-3 after the opening weekend. From that 23% slump, the 2002 Champion rallies with force to take the lead by Tuesday midday -- but the totals show this was obviously a tough challenger.

2003 CROWN AWARDS:

BEST LONG HAIR - 63% to Lisa Ling's 23%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE ON TELEVISION - 67% to Peri Gilpin's 20%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN JOURNALISM - 69% to Linda Stouffer's 19%.

BEST BRUNETTE - 64% to Lisa Ling's 21%.

SUPER-HAIR WARS CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS IV

Alisyn Camerota, 79-30 (72%)

2004 CROWN AWARDS

While Bernstein wins two more awards (Best Hairstyle on Television, Best Hairstyle in Journalism), her amazing winning streak finally ends. Kiran Chetry defeats her 45% to 37% for Best Brunette, and Shania Twain dominates for Best Long Hair by 49% to 27%. Both apparently are the result of online fan clubs organizing more voters than Bernstein's.

SUMMARY: We stop the three-year tracking with this impressive score: 29 winning votes, only two losses! Maybe her secret is the "cat-like instincts" she claimed to have in a magazine interview. Whatever it is, a match for her long hair among our voters is truly hard to find -- and her style fights hard, no matter what the competition.
