Valerie Bertinelli
BORN: 4/23/60, Wilmington, DE
INDUCTED: 2014, Veterans Committee
Valerie Bertinelli has been an actress, an anthor, a designer of her own fashion line -- and in the eyes of many people, a hair model to emulate. Natural thickness and skilled styling made her well-watched Hair Fans beginning in her teens, and for decades beyond that.
It could be argued Bertinelli was upstaged in terms of hair by Mackenzie Phillips, when they played sisters on her breakout TV series One Day at a Time. Bertinelli had a simple center-parted tucked-back long style, which was typical for teens of the 1970s. But as Bertinelli matured, the thickness became more obvious and worked to her advantage. One well-copied change came when she began showing layered graduated bangs.
Bertinelli jokes about the "big hair" she displayed during the first few years of her marriage to rock singer Eddie Van Halen. It also was a reflection of the times, yet was a modified version of the plush long layers many Hair Fans came to admire -- and Bertinelli showed skill in keeping the styles out of her face, even during challenging situations.
Bertinelli kept the medium-long approach on the cable TV comedy Hot in Cleveland, with occasional adjustments in part and waves. Her consistency with quality hair continued -- and it's that consistency through changing trends and seasons of life which earned honor and respect from our Veterans Committee.
