Clara Bow was one of the first big female movie stars, beginning with silent films. The lack of language meant her looks were top priority - and Bow had a range of hairstyles that kept Hair Fans buying tickets between the World Wars. Some called them "tangled," but in the flapper era they were mostly well cut and placed.
Schoolmates in New York reportedly referred to Bow as "carrot top." While they may have meant that as a slur, it became part of her claim to fame. In fact, Red Hair (left) was the title of one of her films in 1928 - and it actually was filmed in color.
Bow apparently cared about her styles so much that hairdresser/manager Daisy DeBoe lived with her in 1930. And when Bow revealed that she added henna to her hair, sales of that product reportedly tripled. The "It Girl" of the silver screen set a standard for movie hair which budding stars can study and adapt 100 years later.
