Jayne Mansfield

Jayne Mansfield rose to stardom in the same era as Marilyn Monroe, and their lives were similar in many ways. While both were famous blondes, Mansfield decided she had to dye her hair in that shade to have a successful show business career. The "bleached blonde" look and a lust for publicity helped her achieve it.

A centerfold in Playboy magazine emphasizing another aspect of Mansfield's body made her nationally-known. But she often had attractively firm hairstyles, in keeping with the Hollywood trend of the time. With teasing and likely permanent waves, they were reminiscent of pre-World War II movie stars in this hall. Photos of her hair in her eyes are very hard to find.

A TV-movie based on Mansfield's life in 1980 featured Ultimate 50 member Loni Anderson in the starring role. It was a fitting choice, with another tempting blonde style that many Hair Fans longed to be near. Mansfield died past the prime of her career, but still in the prime of hairstyle appeal. The woman some dubbed the "smartest dumb blonde" of her time truly had beauty intellect.
