May 2007: Curls Gone Wild, Page 3

A curl is.... dangerous.

CHRISTINA AGUILERA takes a very big chance with her hair, when she displays a "retro" 1940's-style look in concerts. Curl is the clear key to this style's success -- and the S-rolls close to her eyes at the crown simply have to hold, to avoid a look which collapses in her eyes.

Yet the pictures we've seen of Aguilera with weakened curls show she finds a way to keep the style out of her face. She actually may mix long strips of curl together, to "tie" the hair into line. This style obviously takes some time and work to prepare - but for Hair Fans, it's absolutely worth the effort.

A curl is.... power-packed.

Especially when the curl is natural, as we assume this hair model has in a Garnier Fructis commercial. This look almost dares a Hair Fan to try to take it on.

The model displays that Super-Curl power at one point, by stretching a strip of curl all the way out next to her right eye. With some women, this could be serious trouble - because if their curls are artificial, the release probably would reveal some degradation and weakening of the roundness. But in this case....

A curl is.... indestructible.

The strip of curl snaps back to the root instantly, as if it's defying the extender to show confident and deep-down invincibility -- then bounces back out to its usual length and shape, in front of her right eye. (By the way, doesn't Garnier know how to play to a Hair Fan's desires/weaknesses, with these extreme close-ups?)

A curl is.... perfect.

ALISON STEWART had this ultimate-compliment word applied to her, when she anchored The Most (how fitting) at MSNBC and was nominated in the Crown Award "Best Curls" category. We wanted to know why a voter considered her natural curls so perfect -- and here was the explanation: "the uniformity, the size, the cascading effect." At her best, the hair definitely could be all of that.

SUMMARY: A majority of the women on Earth have curly hair, and we say they shouldn't be ashamed of it. Curls can be so much, so many things -- and the more traits a head of curls can have, the better for Hair Fans to admire and love. So let the debate rage. Which curly look is best? Who has the most perfect set? Whose would last the longest, if a wind tried to straighten the curl or high humidity attempted to "frizz" it out of control? Curl-lovers will compare and contrast all day long - and long to feel the evidence for themselves.
