The Ultimate 50

13. Bonnie Bernstein

2016 Update

In most cases, we have not updated the women on this list once we've declared their hair defeated. But "Bonnie-Philes" have been so long to her over the years - so loyal that she won a record number of Crown Awards - that we feel an update is necessary here to prove what we've claimed.

To be sure, Bonnie kept her hair in place and often fabulous on camera for years. But in the 2010s, she took some chances. She rode a mechanical bull at the NCAA Men's Final Four in Houston (shown above). While her amazing well-prepared Super-Hair was shaken a bit (not a lot), it seemed to hold (as in not falling in her eyes).

But one spring morning in 2016, Bonnie was sick. And for some reason, she recorded on her phone how she tried to jar herself awake. Shaking her head to rock music, the hair clearly dropped in an eye for a couple of seconds. It took close to two decades - but we found it: a cold is Bernstein's Super-Kryptonite.

2002 Update

Bonnie has let her short style grow out over the last year or so -- and at this writing, it's actually a couple of inches longer than this. That proved to be her downfall 27 Jan 2, when she covered the A.F.C. Championship game in Pittsburgh. Even though she pinned back much of her hair, she left some wispy strands out around her eyes. A mild south wind was all that was needed to put those strands in her left eye.

Bonnie is the first of our 40 "unbeaten Ultimates" from 2000 to be defeated. Her hair's still enjoyable to watch, though, especially when it's loose. Click this link for one of several web sites honoring Bernstein beauty.

By popular demand, here's an even newer photo of Bernstein's style from March 2002. We thank a Bernstein fan club for providing it. This look is interesting because the vulnerable side (her right) has hair in front, while the side with the part is kept behind the shoulder. We'd think the more logical approach would be the opposite. But for her it looks inviting -- and more importantly, it works.
