December 2001: In Defense of Helmet Hair, page 3

This spectacular photo was taken to promote "Elle" magazine several years ago. We speculate it resulted from a breeze from the side, combined with a quick head turn (perhaps tilted a bit) as a defensive measure.

The long hair near the eyes swings forward -- yet only reaches the nose. The adjustment of the head requires that hair to go a fraction farther, and that brilliant move makes the difference between Super-Hair and defeat. (But it would probably take an extra-jerking turn to the right to keep the hair out, when she faces forward again.) Note also the bangs refuse to budge -- especially around the right eye, which is in incredible danger here.

(Does anyone know who this model is? We'd love to give her credit for this picture!)

But alas, without proper care and positioning, the helmet can be cracked and beaten. This picture comes from a L'Oreal ad for hair color. Even though our model seems to lean forward for protection, a wind from the back blew the corner hair forward and into the eyes.

(Hint: we believe wind from behind provides the biggest danger for a variety of hairstyles. The women who handle that best tend to become Super-Hair champions.)

What else is wrong with this picture? Based on what we've already seen: the bangs are a bit too long at the corner, and not very deeply cut at all. The hair is cut in layers - probably more for sexiness than precision. It definitely has the former, but our point is that the latter can be every bit as enticing.

SUMMARY: Helmet hair does not have to be drab or boring. With careful cutting and preparation, it can be head-turning and fabulous. The helmet can have some variety to it, and even be a bit risky, yet keep its cool position under fire. To make it Super-Hair, what some call the "cap" requires beautiful thinking.
