Super-Hair World Cup I: Hair Canada!
Thanks to a six-match undefeated run by actress Jill Hennessy, we crown Canada the champion of Super-Hair World Cup I -- the country with the most super hair of all!
The star of television's "Crossing Jordan" slowly gained control of the Championship Final, and defeated Mexico's Salma Hayek with a 74-percent majority. "Not as sloppy looking," one voter said of Hennessy's strongly-sizzled curls.
The third-place Consolation Final was close for a long time -- but Australia's Nicole Kidman outlasted Germany's Heidi Klum, winning two-thirds support. The award-winning actress prevailed even though one voter commented: "Nicole's hair is too much. Heidi's is nice, and fits her look."
We took nominations for World Cup I late in 2001, and had enough candidates for a 12-nation tournament. You settled a couple of national champions in a Qualifying Round - then we drew for the groups live online. After six rounds of round-robin battles over three months, here's how things turned out:
=== RED GROUP WINNER ===
GERMANY: HEIDI KLUM.
The supermodel scored two important early wins (one of which reversed a 2000 Super-Hair Wars result), and held on to win the group from there -- but overall, she wound up losing her last three matches.
=== RED GROUP WILD CARD ===
MEXICO: SALMA HAYEK.
This was not settled until the last vote on the final day. The actress and movie producer recovered from an early loss to beat front-runner Heidi Klum -- and did it with just enough votes to edge out Brazil's Gisele Bundchen.
Klum 9 points, Hayek 7, Bundchen 6, Agnetha Falskog (Sweden) 0.
=== BLUE GROUP WINNER ===
CANADA: JILL HENNESSY.
The well-earned champion of arguably the toughest group. She won a Canadian qualifying round over Gillian Findlay, then gained two wins and a tie. Puerto Rico's Maria Celeste Arrarás also was undefeated, but she missed the semifinals because two ties left her lacking in critical bonus points.
Hennessy 7 points, Arrarás 4, Meg Ryan (U.S.A.) 4, Charlize Theron (South Africa) 0.
=== GREEN GROUP WINNER ===
AUSTRALIA: NICOLE KIDMAN.
Nominated by an Aussie visitor to our web site, the award-winning actress dominated her group like none other. She was the only woman with a 3-0 record in qualifying matches -- so her semi-final loss to Salma Hayek came as a shock.
Kidman 23 points, Cecilia Bartoli (Italy) 5, Gabriela Sabatini (Argentina) 5, Naomi Campbell (United Kingdom) 4.
