May 2002: The Ears Have It, Page 3

We credit the recent comeback in stylish hair behind the ears to Uma Thurman. She wore it that way in the movie version of The Avengers in 1998. Her sidepart blew around outdoors in the wind, and bounced dramatically as her character practiced fencing with a co-star -- but the hair never budged off the right ear. We longed for years to know how she did it. Imagine our chagrin when we learned she wore a wig.

Chris didn't go quite so far with this approach, only pulling hair behind the right ear. But similar to Glenda, she had thick wavy hair to help hide the tucked-back strands -- either in front of the shoulder or behind.

How well could this style hold?

This well. This photo was taken during a dance lesson -- and while a lot of long hair is bouncing, the area around the right ear stays remarkably snug. The strip in front of the shoulder is NOT the tucked-back hair. It's a part of the "drape" that simply refused to budge.

Here's one last look at an ear-secured style, with a tempting variation. Look carefully toward the right ear, and you'll see a strip of hair coming down under the tucked-back strands. The "ear hair" is covered on both sides. And considering she wore glasses as well, this took extra care to prepare. We didn't see this woman much, but the style held well when we were watching.

(We saw a game-show contestant on TV years ago move one step beyond this, with a two-part tuck-back. First a strip under, then a strip back behind the ears, then a covering layer, then MORE hair behind the ears. Perhaps it was a mistake -- but it held quite well in her one appearance.)

SUMMARY: Ears can be a handy tool to keep loose hair in line - but it doesn't have to be an instinctive, humdrum affair. The right styling and preparation can add an attractive element of mystery, and even be long-lasting to boot. We consider this a hair trick that stayed out of sight far too long.
