Cup of the Americas/Copa de las Americas 2015
RED (WHITE) AND BLUE - HAIR FANS ARE WITH YOU!
Youth vs. experience. North America vs. South America. Lesser-known vs. superstar. The final round of the 2015 "Cup of the Americas" was a classic clash in many ways -- and Hair Fans wound up siding with a first-year college student at the University of Pennsylvania, over an international singing star from Colombia. Kylene Cochrane reclaims the Cup for the United States, after a final-round loss in 2011!
Cochrane'a playoff place seemed in doubt after a draw in Week 1 of group play. But the middle-distance runner turned things up from there. Cochrane not only stunned three-time Cup entry Shakira in the Championship Final - she shut her out! "Take it home again, Kylene!" shouted one supporter in the final hours of voting. Cochrane maintains the momentum she started in Best Manes on Campus, then in Super-Hair Wars.
The Consolation Final was much closer, and perhaps was more according to form. Pageant queen and attorney Gabriela Ordonez held off college volleyball player Valeria Leon with 57 percent of the vote, giving Honduras a best-ever third-place finish. Puerto Rico settles for fourth, but gains a World Cup spot because the U.S. is the defending champion there.
After weeks of open nominations, the 2015 Cup of the Americas had a record 16 nations. Six weeks of group play ended this way....
