The 4th Annual Crown Awards

After two months of open nominations and nine weeks of online voting, the winners of the 2003 Crown Awards were announced Monday, March 15. This year's winners are:

BEST SHORT HAIR - SUZY KOLBER.

Maybe Joe Namath knew something that night at Giants Stadium, because the ESPN reporter emerged as the winner. The defending champion barely avoided falling to fourth place.

Kolber 38%, Ana Maria Canseco 26%, Susan McGinnis 15%, Paige Davis 14%, Mandy Moore 9%.

BEST LONG HAIR - BONNIE BERNSTEIN.

"Not even close," one voter wrote prophetically. The CBS Sports reporter wins this award for the second year in a row.

Bernstein 63%, Lisa Ling 23%, Kelly Tilghman 10%, Maria Menounos 3%, Lucy Liu 1%.

BEST CURLS - DEBRA MESSING.

Just when we thought this category was getting tougher, the Will and Grace star had her most dominating performance yet -- winning this award for the third time in four years.

Messing 67%, Jean Louisa Kelly 14%, Marsha Thomason 11%, Jennifer Lopez 5%, Teri Polo 4%.

BEST BANGS - SUSAN McGINNIS.

She trailed substantially after one week of voting, but the CBS news anchor with still-unbeatable bangs battled back for her toughest triumph. McGinnis is the first woman to win a Crown category three years in a row! (Photo courtesy TWWL: The Women We Love.)

McGinnis 42%, Ana Maria Canseco 34%, Suzy Kolber 13%, Marilyn Milian 7%, Kristina Abernathy 4%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE ON TELEVISION - BONNIE BERNSTEIN.

"B-Squared" wins her second award, and her second in a row in this category. She should thank supporters such as the one who wrote, "We know how to rally around Her Bonnieness."

Bernstein 67%, Peri Gilpin 20%, Jennifer Aniston 6%, Kelly Tilghman 4%, Eliza Dishku 3%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN A MOVIE - DIANE LANE.

The photo sent in support of this actress showed a somewhat messy style, but the star of Under the Tuscan Sun wasn't burned by it at all. Lane has the highest percentage of any winner!

Lane 89%, Anna Faris 4%, Reese Witherspoon 4%, Chiaki Kuriyama 3%, Christina Milian 1%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN MUSIC - SHANIA TWAIN.

Up! goes the Canadian singer to her second win in a row. Two-time winner Faith Hill was spurned by voters, for a short style some called "nasty" and "stupid."

Twain 47%, Heidi Newfield 29%, Crystal Gayle 13%, Jessica Simpson 7%, Hill 4%, Mandy Moore 1%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN ATHLETICS - HEATHER MITTS.

The WUSA soccer all-star and Philadelphia City League champion is becoming a TV reporter, yet she overwhelmed the competition anyway. The main issue for voters here seemed to be whether Anna Kournikova should cut her long hair.

Mitts 56%, Mia Hamm 26%, Kournikova 14%, Debbie McCormick 5%.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR - KELLY TILGHMAN.

The Golf Channel host had a record five nominations, but must settle for one Crown. A sometimes-overlooked co-star of Las Vegas made things competitive.

Tilghman 57%, Marsha Thomason 28%, Sumi Das 7%, Jackie Guerrido 3%, Bianca Kajlich 2%.

BEST BLONDE - HOLLY HERBERT.

The co-host of Celebrity Justice switched categories, yet won her second Crown in as many years. She held off a serious challenge from the host of Extra.

Herbert 41%, Dayna Devon 30%, Morgan Fairchild 11%, Melissa McDermott 9%, Nancy O'Dell 6%, Teri Polo 3%.

BEST BRUNETTE - BONNIE BERNSTEIN.

Bernstein brings home back-to-back Brunette titles. In our first-ever meeting of Hair Fans' Hall of Fame members, the new lighter look of Natalie Allen hurt her cause.

Bernstein 64%, Lisa Ling 21%, Shania Twain 8%, Allen 4%, Kelly Tilghman 4%.

BEST REDHEAD - DIANE LANE.

Lane makes it a double-Crown performance, helped a bit by someone who spotted one of the three weeks when we quietly took off voting filters. "Drop-dead gorgeous as always!!!" one gushed.

Lane 77%, Debra Messing 17%, Laura Prepon 3%, Kyra Phillips 2%, Nicole Kidman 1%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN JOURNALISM -- BONNIE BERNSTEIN.

The CBS Sports reporter continued her unbeaten dominance. With her fourth Crown of the year came the first comment we've ever received in French: "Mademoiselle Bernstein est une beauté sans égal."

Bernstein 69%, Linda Stouffer 19%, Marian de la Fuente 5%, Kelly Tilghman 5%, Lisa Guerrero 3%.

MAKEOVER OF THE YEAR - HALLE BERRY.

History is made, as the actress's switch to longer locks makes her the first minority woman to be voted a Crown Award! "Halle looks hotter with long hair," one voter said; "she can eat crackers in my bed anytime...." (Photo courtesy Hallewood)

Berry 58%, Alanis Morissette 23%, Kaley Cuoco 13%, Kelly Rowland 4%, Kathy Griffin 2%.

BEST NEW ORIGINAL STYLE - SUZY KOLBER.

In the closest thing to a head-to-head showdown in the awards, the sports reporter edged an actress to capture a second Crown.

Kolber 53%, Halle Berry 44%, Pauley Perrette 2%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN SCIENCE/METEOROLOGY - HEATHER TESCH.

In a new category filled with Weather Channel personalities, the woman with perhaps the least fame was a surprise winner. "Heather's hair is sooo cute," one voter wrote. (Photo courtesy TWWL)

Tesch 36%, Jillian Barberie 27%, Jackie Guerrido 21%, Jeanetta Jones 12%, Kristina Abernathy 5%.

SUPER-HAIR WARS CHAMPION - LIZ CHO.

She had a controversial "no-voting-filters" win over Kelly Tilghman, but the New York news anchor also won close fights against several strong contenders.
