The 7th Annual Crown Awards

After six weeks of open nominations and nine weeks of online voting, the 2006 Crown Award winners were announced in a live online chat 11 March. Thanks for all of your input -- and congratulations to this year's Crown recipients!

BEST SHORT HAIR - Heather Tesch.

Supporters consider her blonde hair like morning sunshine at The Weather Channel. As one wrote: "What a classy perfect lady!"

Tesch 39 percent, Kyra Phillips 29 percent, Cheryl Burke 16 percent, Elisabeth Hasselbeck 14 percent, Kim Alexis 3 percent.

BEST LONG HAIR - Bonnie Bernstein.

Changing networks to ESPN didn't hurt this veteran champion -- and the absence of a recent two-time winner only helped her recapture a title she last won in 2003. She beat a World Cup winner, as well as our site's hottest hair of the moment.

Bernstein 50 percent, Jennifer Love Hewitt 25 percent, Angie Everhart 11 percent, Carrie Underwood 8 percent, Halle Berry 5 percent.

BEST CURLS - Keri Russell.

This actress and Ultimate 50 member has grown past the Felicity look, and developed steamy adult waves. She won a category which gained praise from voters for being the "toughest.... from top to bottom."

Russell 32 percent, Debra Messing 25 percent, Faith Hill 21 percent, Vivian Gray 17 percent, Paulina Rubio 5 percent.

BEST BANGS - Jennifer Love Hewitt.

A clear forehead-to-forehead rivalry is developing here. The star of Ghost Whisperer used Hair Fans' Hall of Fame credentials to win for the second year in a row, holding off a late charge by a four-time winner.

Hewitt 49 percent, Susan McGinnis 45 percent, Cheryl Burke 4 percent, Jann Carl 2 percent.

BEST HAIRSTYLE ON TELEVISION - Bonnie Bernstein.

The sideline star writes another line in the history books with this win. She's the first person to win a category five years in a row!

Bernstein 48 percent, Robin Meade 19 percent, Jennifer Love Hewitt 18 percent, Susan McGinnis 14 percent, Bo Derek 1 percent.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN A MOVIE - Anne Hathaway.

Two attractive styles were tied in the voting, heading to the final weekend -- but the assistant in The Devil Wears Prada wins an award, where Oscar nominee Meryl Streep did not.

Hathaway 45 percent, Jessica Simpson 43 percent, Sandra Bullock 6 percent, Jennifer Love Hewitt 6 percent.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN MUSIC - Carrie Underwood.

An all-country clash found Sara Evans well ahead after one week, but then the former "American Idol" who constantly wins our "best hair" polls for awards shows came roaring back. "Carrie is gorgeous," one voter declared.

Underwood 35 percent, Evans 34 percent, Martina McBride 20 percent, Faith Hill 11 percent.

BEST HAIR IN ATHLETICS - Christy Hemme.

A TNA pro wrestler who absolutely invites hair-pulling led the field by, shall we say, a long ways.

Hemme 42 percent, Heather Mitts 29 percent, Erica Blasberg 22 percent, Megan Willis 5 percent, Martina Hingis 2 percent.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR - Aleksandra Ivanovskaya.

Long locks prevail again here, as the 2006 Miss Russia pageant winner becomes the first native of Europe (not to mention Russian) to win a Crown!

Ivanovskaya 48 percent, Ashley Tisdale 27 percent, D'Rae Ward 13 percent, Kristin Cornett 8 percent, Cheryl Burke 4 percent.

BEST BLONDE - Carrie Underwood.

The country star wins a second Crown, defeating two former winners of this award. A University of Texas softball player was a rather surprising second.

Underwood 36 percent, Megan Willis 20 percent, Heather Mitts 18 percent, Ashley Tisdale 16 percent, Jennie Finch Daigle 9 percent.

BEST BRUNETTE - Bonnie Bernstein.

Make it three Crowns for Bernstein and four wins in this category, despite complaints about overly loyal support from an online fan club. She left the top two women in the world on our "Top Ten Tresses" list gasping for air.

Bernstein 48 percent, Robin Meade 23 percent, Natalie Morales 18 percent, Sibila Vargas 7 percent, Kelly Tilghman 5 percent.

BEST REDHEAD - Angie Everhart.

The winner of Super-Hair World Cup II prevailed here for the second year in a row, fighting off a spirited "Hemme-powered" opponent. One voter declared this model "the hottest woman on the planet."

Everhart 42 percent, Christy Hemme 36 percent, Kyra Phillips 15 percent, Orla Fallon 6 percent, Wendy Nations 1 percent.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN JOURNALISM - Bonnie Bernstein.

Bernstein wins four Crowns for the third time in five years, and now has 17 in all. She invited supporters to use the phrase "dynasty," but provoked detractors to call for category changes.

Bernstein 43 percent, Julie Banderas 25 percent, Natalie Morales 18 percent, Christi Paul 12 percent, Sam Ryan 1 percent.

MAKEOVER OF THE YEAR - Eva Mendes.

We're not sure how long she kept this shoulder-length look, but Hair Fans called it "flat out smokin' hot." The actress gains the highest percentage of any winner!

Mendes 52 percent, Hilary Duff 27 percent, Elisabeth Hasselbeck 10 percent, Sharyn Alfonsi 7 percent, Kim Alexis 3 percent.

BEST NEW ORIGINAL STYLE - Eva Mendes.

Mendes wins a second Crown, for a style praised as "sexy" and "sultry." But she had to fight off a serious challenge from the Houston City League champion.

Mendes 47 percent, Dominique Sachse 39 percent, Elisabeth Hasselbeck 6 percent, Cheryl Burke 4 percent, Jann Carl 4 percent.

BEST HAIR IN SCIENCE/METEOROLOGY - Alexandra Steele.

While her opponents won comments of praise, the Weather Channel's prime-time meteorologist quietly gained the votes. A longtime Top Ten Tresses member finally has a Crown.

Steele 36 percent, Heather Tesch 28 percent, Kristin Cornett 20 percent, Mary Gamarra 11 percent, Stephanie Abrams 5 percent.

BEST HAIR IN GOVERNMENT/POLITICS - Stephanie Herseth.

Another Top Ten member takes a title -- and this U.S. House member is likely the first woman from South Dakota ever to win a Crown.

Herseth 48 percent, Debbie Wasserman Schultz 21 percent, Mary Bono 12 percent, Condoleezza Rice 11 percent, Katherine Harris 8 percent.

Super-Hair Wars Champion - Natalie Morales.

The Today Show journalist won three times at the start of 2006, and three times in the playoffs where it counted. She won with an average 74.5 percent majority - almost a three-to-one margin!
