Q&A
May 2019: Brittany Begley, Sacramento TV Journalist
A lot of people may be television news "Hair Fans", and not realize it. They watch newscasts for more than the top stories. They also check the hairstyles of the reporters and anchors, and quickly form opinions about them. Many TV stations and reporters know this well....
so BRITTANY BEGLEY tries hard to satisfy them. Begley grew up in the Carolinas, where heat and humidity can make any head of hair difficult to maintain. After several years in Ohio, she's now at a station in Sacramento watching for traffic problems and consumer discounts.
Begley found our website and said she "loves to talk about hair." So we set up an email exchange of questions and answers - and even though she was an upset loser due to late voting in Super-Hair Wars, we're still impressed by the effort she makes:
SUPER-HAIR: How would you describe your hair and your current style?
BRITTANY BEGLEY: I would describe my hair as a labor of love! Throughout the years I've had some hits and misses -Too long, too dark, too frizzy. I used to be obsessed with the long, straight hair but I'm currently into a little less lengh and more style.
My current hairstyle is all about volume. And it has made a big difference in my overall look!
S-H: What do you like most about your hair? (Is there anything you dislike about it?)
BB: My hair is like my attitude. I never give up. Despite all the heat, chemicals and back combing it's still here... AND somewhat healthy.
S-H: We watched one of your "video resumes," and it appears you've adjusted the length of your hair a bit over the years. Have you always kept your hair at its current length? What's the shortest or longest you've ever gone?
BB: It's true. I've had dark hair, light hair, short and long hair. Honestly, as long as my hair isn't "messy" on-air I'll keep the hairstyle until I'm ready for a change. The last thing I want is to do is work hard to build a reel with 20 different hairstyles.
S-H: Do you use any special products (spray, gel, etc.) to keep your hair looking sharp?
BB: I'm a huge fan of Kenra hairspray #25. It keeps your hair in place for hours! I also wash my hair once a week with Joy dish soap to get all the gunk out. It sounds crazy, but it works!
S-H: In general, what's the biggest challenge you face in keeping your hair in place?
BB: I tease my bangs to the left and put the right section behind my ear. I usually turn to the left when I do weather or traffic so I make sure my bangs aren't blocking my face.
S-H: What advice would you give someone who wanted to develop Super-Hair, such as a style like yours?
BB: I used to watch You-Tubers for hair advice, but I would always get frustrated because sometimes they take awhile to get to the point. I now watch Sam Villa educational hair videos on you-tube for hairdressers. It's more technical and less entertainment.
S-H: Who would you consider to have the best head of hair you’ve seen -- in TV news or otherwise?
BB: Jennifer Aniston will always be my favorite. Her hair is always so shiny.
S-H FOLLOW-UP: Why do you use Joy, as opposed to other dishwashing liquids?
BB (from Twitter): @JasonJDaniel's tip to use dish soap once a week was a game changer. And I use "Joy" because finding joy in other people's happiness is the real secret to happiness.
CONCLUSION: Brittany is another example of the surprising tricks that can lead to outstanding hair. If you're in California and see her on the air (or even away from it), please let us know how she's doing. Begley comes across to us as a big hair deal - and we think Hair Fans indeed can find joy in that.
