The 8th Annual Crown Awards

We had weeks of open nominations -- then after about two months of online voting, the 2007 Crown Award winners were announced in a live chat 9 March. Thanks to everyone who participated, and congratulations to the women who wear the Crowns!

BEST SHORT HAIR: Suzy Kolber.

One voter wrote the ESPN sports reporter "looks great with this style" - great enough to win this category for the second time.

Kolber 47 percent, Kristin Chenoweth 24%, Catherine Anaya 16%, Maggie Rodriguez 8%, Teri Polo 5%.

BEST LONG HAIR: Bonnie Bernstein.

ESPN sweeps the top categories, and the all-time leader in Crowns wins this title for the fourth time. She overcame critics who said she's overdue for a cut.

Bernstein 37 percent, Robin Meade 29%, Ashley Tisdale 19%, Samantha Harris 15%.

BEST CURLS: Rebecca Gayheart.

The real-life wife of "McDreamy" shows full rolls which Hair Fans find steamy. The actress outlasted two former winners of this category.

Gayheart 37 percent, Melina Kanakaredes 25%, Keri Russell 15%, Cristina Aguilera 14%, Giada DeLaurentiis 10%.

BEST BANGS: Catherine Anaya.

The Phoenix news anchor and City League champion only led one week out of three, but dominated that week strongly enough to beat a young prime-time actress.

Anaya 40 percent, Aimee Teegarden 32%, Kyra Phillips 17%, Kaylee DeFer 6%, Elisabeth Hasselbeck 5%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE ON TELEVISION: Samantha Harris.

A realigned category without any journalists found a co-host of the U.S. Dancing With the Stars winning in a waltz.

Harris 42 percent, Ashley Tisdale 19%, Emily Procter 15%, Jennifer Esposito 14%, Joely Fisher 10%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN A MOVIE: Eva Mendes.

Not even a surprise trip to "rehab" during the voting could keep this actress from winning the Crown for We Own the Night. She now owns three Crowns in the last two years.

Mendes 55 percent, Keira Knightley 23%, Emma Roberts 19%, Scarlet Johannson 2%, Kerry Washington 1%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN MUSIC: Carrie Underwood.

The country star's daring styles never seem to fail on stage. She widened her lead on the competition, and wins this category for the second year in a row.

Underwood 42%, Ashley Tisdale 27%, Emmy Rossum 20%, Celine Dion 8%, Mariah Carey 2%.

BEST HAIR IN ATHLETICS: Jennie Finch Daigle.

She may be more famous now for Celebrity Apprentice than pro softball. But she still takes this Crown for the second time in three years, and even prompted a comparison to Pamela Anderson.

Finch Daigle 37 percent, Tanith Belbin 30%, Michelle Williamson 19%, Gail Kim 8%, Anna Rawson 6%.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Selena Gomez.

She moved from Hannah Montana to Wizards of Waverly Place, and probably moved plenty of Hair Fans to start watching the Disney Channel. She was praised for "amazing.... sexy" hair.

Gomez 42 percent, Melora Hardin 23%, Maggie Rodriguez 22%, Cat Cora 8%, Anna Rawson 5%.

BEST BLONDE: Carrie Underwood.

The woman who sings Before He Cheats didn't need to do anything illegal, to win a second Crown. She takes a "Music and Blonde" double for the second year in a row.

Underwood 36 percent, Ashley Tisdale 23%, Lara Spencer 18%, Heather Mitts 13%, Jessica Simpson 10%.

BEST BRUNETTE: Bonnie Bernstein.

Three members of the Hair Fans' Hall of Fame collided here -- yet the woman behind "Velvet Hammer" crushed her opponents, to win this title for the fifth time in six years.

Bernstein 39%, Jennifer Love Hewitt 28%, Robin Meade 25%, Claudia Lynx 5%, Maria Menounos 4%.

BEST REDHEAD: Angie Everhart.

One voter dared to declare this Hall of Fame member has "the best head of red hair in history." The actress/model wins for the third year in a row, and has the highest percentage of any winner.

Everhart 57 percent, Kyra Phillips 15%, Marcia Cross 13%, Christy Hemme 10%, Priscilla Dunstan 6%.

BEST HAIRSTYLE IN JOURNALISM: Robin Meade.

CNN Headline News took her name off the morning report, but she's lost no respect from Hair Fans. She captures this Crown for the second time in three years.

Meade 46 percent, Alex Witt 25%, Janet Shamlian 20%, Taina Hernandez 9%.

MAKEOVER OF THE YEAR: Heidi Collins.

A slightly longer look with more natural-looking color gives this CNN anchor the award, in the year's closest race. In fact, some voters encouraged her to take the style even longer.

Collins 38 percent, Christina Applegate 35%, Kristin Chenoweth 16%, Ashlee Simpson 11%.

BEST NEW ORIGINAL STYLE: Christina Applegate.

Her neck-length waves have Hair Fans more than willing to ask Samantha Who? One voter praised it as a "a clean, coiffed break from.... Kelly Bundy."

Applegate 47 percent, Catherine Anaya 41%, Maggie Rodriguez 8%, Dana Delany 3%, Hilary Swank 1%.

BEST HAIR IN WEATHER/SCIENCE: Heather Tesch.

After winning Best Short Hair in 2006, The Weather Channel's morning co-host returns to her specialty for a third Crown there in five years. She led what some voters called the toughest category of all.

Tesch 35 percent, Jackie Meretsky 26%, Kristina Abernathy 20%, Domenica Davis 10%, April Warnecke 9%.

BEST HAIR IN GOVERNMENT/POLITICS: Cristina Fernandez.

She moved from first lady to President of Argentina, and became the first woman from South America to win a Crown. (And for scoffers of this category: only six others had higher vote totals.)

Fernandez 50 percent, Mary Bono 28%, Elizabeth Kucinich 16%, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin 3.4%, Peggy Bilsten 2.5%.

BEST HAIR IN SPORTS REPORTING: Bonnie Bernstein.

This new category makes it a made-to-order "triple Crown," for a woman who now has 20 overall. "Bonnie's locks still dominate the SH universe," one supporter justifiably declared.

Bernstein 47 percent, Erin Andrews 33%, Suzy Kolber 12%, Kelly Tilghman 8%.

SUPER-HAIR WARS CHAMPION HAIRSTYLE: Paige Hemmis.

Being part of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team has helped this blonde beauty build a following. She not only won six contests without a loss, but she came within one day and two votes of becoming the first woman to beat Bonnie Bernstein head-to-head.
