B.M.O.C.: Best Manes On Campus - 2009-10

Colleges and universities, we're told, are all about getting an education. But let's be honest - they're also places for admiring women whose hairstyles are blossoming into their prime, and are well-prepared for a long day of studies and activities.

We believe some of the greatest heads of hair can be found on campuses, so this area is dedicated to locating and displaying them. We want your nominations of the "best manes," perhaps at the college in your town or the one you attend. (And trust us from experience: the best styles do not always belong to the cheerleaders.)

HOLLINS (VA): ALEX HERRING.

She's a junior math major who's involved with the golf team and a student "leadership institute." This lovely loose shoulder-length look didn't quite lead the Roanoke City League competition, but third place isn't a bad finish. [Posted 5/14/10]

ORAL ROBERTS: JESSICA DUES.

This senior talks on the university home page about being advertising manager of the student newspaper, and doing some on-campus television news. Her care with long hair may reflect her side interest as a "makeup artist." [Posted 5/2/10]

ROANOKE (VA): LYNSEY FARRIS.

A senior who stayed home for college will receive a degree in "health and human performance." Her leadership on the volleyball team convinced us she's healthy -- and her sleek blonde hair performed well enough to finish second in the local City League tournament. [Posted 4/22/10]

SPRING HILL (AL): ANNMARIE COAN.

Read an online biography of this sophomore economics and political science major, and you'll learn she dreams of being "a reality TV star." Her long hair was real enough to finish fourth in the Mobile City League contest. [Posted 4/7/10]

MIAMI: JENAE MOLINA.

A Hair Fan is impressed by long flowing style control on this senior public relations major. Perhaps it's no surprise that she's on the cheerleading squad. [Courtesy Sports Illustrated; posted 3/26/10]

WICHITA STATE: JAMIE HULL.

She's smart enough to have a 4.0 grade point average during the spring semester, while at the same time hitting home runs for the college softball team. A junior communications major was too powerful for a seven-woman field after Week 1, and her long hair dominated Delia Demaschin in the finals 9-2. [Final 3/17/10]

(Third through seventh place: Lily Wakim; Haley Dotson, Brianna Kaiser, Sammie Shook, Hayley Temple tied.)

ALABAMA-BIRMINGHAM: ASHLEY LOONEY.

This pre-business major is in her fourth year of college, but officially is a junior on the campus golf team. Her medium-long blonde hair has matured well enough to tie for third place in the Birmingham City League contest. [Posted 2/16/10]

TENNESSEE: SAMARA GELB.

A sophomore from Maryland who's majoring in advertising, she put her best hair forward in a six-way battle. The academic All-America "honorable mention" in swimming was too powerful for the field, winning a 58-percent majority in the second heat. [Final 2/4/10]

(Second through sixth place: Alex Barsanti, Jessica Rolfs, Kirstyn Colonias-Mackenzie Higgins tied, Jessica Spigner.)

 SAMFORD: LEAH SKINNER.

A freshman who became a college cheerleader immediately after attending a Christian high school, her mix of risky bangs wavy long hair earned her second place in the Birmingham City League competition. [Posted 1/9/10]

OKLAHOMA: ANDREA SELLMEYER.

A senior health major who's entering her fourth year on the golf team, her biography page notes she's made a hole-in-one since we first posted her here last season. It does not mention the 2008 Crown Award she won for Best Hair in Athletics - and she isn't changing a winning approach. [Posted 12/26/9]

MINNESOTA: CARLY STEFFEN.

A Hair Fan nominated one cheerleader with national publicity -- but we did some digging, and found one that Hair Fans like even more. A first-year student who loves figure skating and was praised by a voter for "a tad more body" topped Lori Gibbemeyer 17-13, ending a six-way contest which another voter called "The best BMOC in a long time." [Final 12/20/9]

(Third through sixth place: Sam Cameranesi, Chelsea Stefano, Mallory Van Ness tied; Amanda Berglove.)

NORTHWESTERN STATE (LA): CHRISTIAN MARKS.

A five-athlete fight came down wound up in the strong steady hands of a "redshirt freshman" soccer goalie, whose ultimate goal is a doctoral degree in microbiology. A two-semester honor roll student outsmarted Amy Dodson in a close final match 13-11, and won praise from one voter for her long hair's "body and sleekness." [Final 11/15/9]

(Third through fifth place: Megan Dockery-Theresa Halle tied; Caroline Seago.)

NOTRE DAME: DENISE ELLISON.

She's now a junior and still playing on the tennis team -- and she's done much to earn a second year on this honor roll. Representing her native Oman, she placed second in the 2009 AAA Cup. And by adding protective bangs to her long hair, she's secured a firm position in our Top Ten Tresses list. [Posted 10/19/9]

CENTRAL FLORIDA: KATIE RILEY.

This sophomore majoring in hospitality management describes herself as "driven." That drive apparently includes developing great long blonde hair, as this volleyball player made quick work of a five-athlete field by winning 60 percent of your votes. [Final 9/25/9]

(Second through fifth place: Meredith Murphy; Lucia Pinelli, Becca Thomas, Katherine Weiland tied.)

NORTH DAKOTA STATE: BROOKE VANDENBURGH.

Exercise science is the major of this junior from Wisconsin. She gains "practicum" in that on the college volleyball team, and survived a spirited fight with fellow student-athlete Brittany Page 15-12. [Final 9/10/9]

GREENSBORO: MELISSA GALLAHER.

This sophomore honors student majors in "exercise science" -- and she's getting plenty of exercise, playing on both the college soccer and lacrosse teams. She attacked the competition well during a summer City League tournament in her region, finishing third overall (best in Greensboro proper) with praise for sleek blonde locks. [Posted 8/20/9]
