The 9th Annual Crown Awards
Two months of open nominations and two months of online voting led to more than a dozen different Crown Award winners for 2008! We announced the best styles of the year live in our chat room 15 March -- and we congratulate all who wear the Crowns!
BEST SHORT HAIR: Victoria Warren
A Boston TV reporter gained a loyal following from Super-Hair Wars momentum, and slowly grew to dominate this category.
Warren 43 percent, Catherine Anaya 25%, Jacintha Wesselingh 18%, Rihanna 10%, Susie Gharib 4%.
BEST LONG HAIR: Bonnie Bernstein
Her air time has diminished on ESPN, but "Bonnie-philes" remained loyal enough to give her this prize for the third year in a row, and fifth time in seven years.
Bernstein 50 percent, Kate Beckinsale 31%, Aikaterini Evangelinou 12%, Jessica Alba 4%, Brooke Shields 3%.
BEST CURLS: Debra Messing
The Starter Wife reached an early finish on cable TV, but its star enjoyed a renaissance here. She's the queen of curls for the fifth time, but a relationship therapist came in a close second.
Messing 45 percent, Dr. Lori Buckley 41%, Rebecca Gayheart 6%, Leona Lewis 5%, Jessica Biel 4%.
BEST BANGS: Jordana Brewster
An occasional guest actress on Chuck became the star of a category with five new names, as a long light fringe won voters over.
J. Brewster 37 percent, Natalie Zea 23%, Paget Brewster 17%, Patti Anne Browne 16%, Jennifer Garner 6%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE ON TELEVISION: Samantha Harris
She's added The Insider to her workload, on top of Dancing with the Stars -- but no one could move inside the danger range to get close to this back-to-back Crown winner.
Harris 43 percent, Lauren Conrad 27%, Maria Canals-Barrera 12%, Brooke Shields 12%, Holly Hunter 6%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN A MOVIE: Ashley Tisdale
It took three High School Musicals for "Sharpay" to earn her first Crown. One voter declared she "has the thickest head of hair on the planet."
Tisdale 36 percent, Kristin Davis 33%, Eva Mendes 14%, Zooey Deschanel 11%, Olga Kurylenko 4%, Jenna Fischer 2%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN MUSIC: Martina McBride
This country singer last won a Crown eight years ago with a much shorter style. It apparently was long enough this year to unseat a two-time champion.
McBride 42 percent, Carrie Underwood 23%, Taylor Swift 15%, Shakira 14%, Alicia Keys 5%.
BEST HAIR IN ATHLETICS: Andrea Sellmeyer
A golfer at the University of Oklahoma came from behind in the final week, and surprised two former winners. One supporter noted she has great hair despite "a very busy schedule."
Sellmeyer 30 percent, Jennie Finch-Daigle 28%, Maria Sharapova 24%, Heather Mitts 17%, Jessica Fishburn 1%.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Natalie Zea
Her drama Dirty Sexy Money didn't survive, but this long style with tempting bangs appears very strong and long-lasting. She broke free from a first-week deadlock to win with ease.
Zea 48 percent, Andrea Sellmeyer 27%, Maria Canals-Barrera 20%, Jessica Fishburn 5%. (Jill Martin was disqualified after voting began.)
BEST BLONDE: Carrie Underwood
The country music star claimed this award for the third year in a row - and someone considered her so dominant that they suggested naming the award in her honor.
Underwood 31 percent, Erin Andrews 25%, Aikaterini Evangelinou 19%, Emily Procter 19%, Holly Hunter 7%.
BEST BRUNETTE: Bonnie Bernstein
Some people admitted casting "anti-Bonnie" votes, but they didn't get organized around anyone in particular. So Bernstein prevails for the fourth year in a row.
Bernstein 48 percent, Anne Hathaway 20.5%, Robin Meade 19.7%, Sam Ryan 10%, Claudia Lynx 2%.
BEST REDHEAD: Debra Messing
It came down literally to the final vote, but this actress finally wins a second Crown in a category she's never dominated. One voter argued "Messing should be the person everybody thinks of first."
Messing 38 percent, Kyra Phillips 37%, Connie Britton 13%, Christy Hemme 6%, Julianne Moore 6%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN JOURNALISM: Victoria Warren
The Boston reporter was in a three-way first-week tie, but gained strength from there to capture a second Crown. In the process, she beat a new rival from Michigan.
Warren 31%, Stacey Skrysak 23%, Robin Meade 22%, Alex Witt 15%, Barbara Bermudo 6%, Chris Jansing 3%.
MAKEOVER OF THE YEAR: Shania Twain
She could qualify for Comeback of the Year as well. A shorter loose look displayed at the Country Music Association Awards earns the singer her first Crown since 2005.
Twain 33 percent, Jenny McCarthy 26%, Natalie Zea 23%, Rebecca Jarvis 14%, Sharyn Alfonsi 6%.
BEST NEW ORIGINAL STYLE: Brea Grant
A mix of chunks and twists allowed the speedster on Heroes to race away from a small pack.
Grant 53 percent, Rihanna 31%, Tammy Terry 16%.
BEST HAIR IN WEATHER/SCIENCE: Dr. Lisa Masterson
For the first time, a scientist upsets the TV meteorologists - and a co-host of The Doctors whose specialty is obstetrcis and gynecology becomes only the second African-American Crown winner.
Masterson 32 percent, Jackie Guerrido 24%, Heather Tesch 19%, Kelly Cass 14%, Laura Wibbenmeyer 10%.
BEST HAIR IN GOVERNMENT/POLITICS: Elizabeth Kucinich
She's a native of Ireland, who's married to an Ohio Congressman -- and she came from behind in the late returns to hand "Palin Power" another setback.
Kucinich 33 percent, Sarah Palin 32%, Maria Shriver 18%, Supriya Jindal 15%, Cristina Fernandez 3%.
BEST HAIR IN SPORTS REPORTING: Bonnie Bernstein
The ESPN host is now two-for-two in this category, three-for-three in this year's Crown - and up to a staggering 23 awards overall.
Bernstein 44 percent, Tina Cervasio 27%, Erin Andrews 18%, Suzy Kolber 10%, Tracy Wolfson 1%.
SUPER-HAIR WARS CHAMPION HAIRSTYLE: Victoria Warren
The Boston journalist becomes only the second woman to have a "triple-Crown" year. She won two tight matches over other Crown nominees, then scored a historic and commanding Challenge of Champions knockout of Bonnie Bernstein.
