The 11th Annual Crown Awards
After weeks of open nominations and two months of voting, the winner of the 2010 Crown Awards were announced during a live chat 6 March. History was made in several ways this year -- and we congratulate all of the winners!
BEST SHORT HAIR: Maggie Rodriguez
She lost her job with CBS News during the nomination period, but Hair Fans still voted for her high-risk cut "early" and often. She's the first minority winner of a top-level Crown Award!
Rodriguez 47 percent, Heather Tesch 25%, Ashleigh Banfield 15%, Carolyn Hennesy 11%, Carol Massar 3%.
BEST LONG HAIR: Erin Andrews
While she's branching out to projects beyond College Game Day, the ESPN reporter gives that network its seventh win in this category.
Andrews 48 percent, Danielle Fishel 34%, Susan Graver 8%, Anne Hathaway 6%, Maryse Ouellet 5%.
BEST CURLS: Jennifer Beals, Alyson Footer
(tie)
The first tie in Crown Award history is between an actress who's softened the classic Flashdance look and a Houston Astros blogger who keeps things strong and tight.
Beals and Footer 31 percent each, Olivia Palermo 18%, Keri Russell 16%, Lori Buckley 5%.
BEST BANGS: Emily Deschanel
The star of Bones solved a hair puzzle for supporters, by adding bangs for a new season. She came back from a bad first week to defeat the defending winner.
Deschanel 38 percent, Paula Creamer 30%, Lea Michele 27%, Katy Perry 4%, Nicole Polizzi 1%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE ON TELEVISION: Laura Wright
She's frequently in trouble on General Hospital, and had a narrow escape here -- surviving a poor final week of voting to top a star of Glee.
Wright 33 percent, Lea Michele 29%, Danielle Fishel 19%, Marg Helgenberger 15%, Anisha Nagarajan 4%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN A MOVIE: Naomi Watts
The star of Fair Game seemed to have an unfair advantage at times - dominating the field with sweeping curls. She's the first Australian Crown winner since 2002.
Watts 55 percent, Christina Aguilera 18%, Amanda Seyfried 12%, Amy Adams 9%, Amanda Peet 6%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN MUSIC: Carrie Underwood
The country star wins this Crown for the fourth time in five years, and has the highest percentage of any winner. Critics accused her of wearing extensions, but one voter proposed naming the category in her honor.
Underwood 60 percent, Taylor Swift 26%, Grace Potter 10%, Nicki Minaj 3%, Wynonna Judd 1%.
BEST NEW ORIGINAL STYLE: Kristi Noem
A new member of Congress from South Dakota didn't last long in Top Ten Tresses, but that didn't deter from bringing a Crown to South Dakota. She broke open a deadlocked race in the final week of voting.
Noem 48 percent, Ashleigh Banfield 40%, Hoda Kotb 8%, Michele Miller 4%.
BEST HAIR IN ATHLETICS: Gretchen Bleiler
Lindsey who? This woman showed the U.S. ski program has depth in hair quality, by edging the U.S. Women's Open golf champion at the wire.
Bleiler 29 percent, Paula Creamer 24%, Maryse Ouellet 18%, Morgan Pressel 17%, Anna Chakveradze 12%.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Shenae Grimes
Call this a victory for clean-cut over steamy, as a co-star of 90210 topped a woman famous for modeling in Playboy.
Grimes 31 percent, Alison Waite 23%, Nathalia Ramos 21%, Morgan Pressel 17%, Kyle Richards 9%.
BEST BLONDE: Erin Andrews
The ESPN reporter wins a second Crown, and wins this category for the second year in a row. One voter was amazed by how "very long" her hair has become.
Andrews 46 percent, Heather Tesch 30%, Maryse Ouellet 12%, Aly Michalka 6%, Morgan Pressel 6%.
BEST BRUNETTE: Betty Nguyen
It's a second win for the 2010 CBS morning team. "No brainer if you've ever seen Betty deliver the news," a supporter said.
Nguyen 46 percent, Lea Michele 30%, Erin Burnett 19%, Susan Graver 6%.
BEST REDHEAD: Amanda Righetti
A co-star of The Mentalist outsmarted a Fox Business Network anchor at the wire, and won praise from voters for being "such a babe."
Righetti 41 percent, Liz Claman 38%, Marg Helgenberger 14%, Kyra Phillips 6%, Wynonna Judd 2%.
BEST HAIRSTYLE IN JOURNALISM: Erin Burnett
A Street Smart anchor for CNBC gets revenge on Betty Nguyen here, in what several voters considered the toughest overall category. "Great body.... always looks soft and free...." praised one supporter.
Burnett 36 percent, Nguyen 32%, Amy Robach 12%, Nicole Petallides 11%, Rebecca Jarvis 8%.
MAKEOVER OF THE YEAR:
Emily Deschanel, Susan Hendricks (tie)
Make that the first two ties in Crown Awards history! The Bones star receives a second Crown, ending in a deadlock with a HLN anchor.
Deschanel and Hendricks 41 percent each, Kate Gosselin 10%, Taylor Swift 9%.
BEST HAIR IN WEATHER/SCIENCE: April Warnecke
A morning forecaster in Phoenix wins a Crown on her second attempt, topping two Weather Channel veterans. "Warnecke melted me," admitted one voter who changed his plans after seeing the nominees.
Warnecke 47 percent, Stephanie Abrams 44%, Heather Tesch 9%.
BEST HAIR IN GOVERNMENT/POLITICS: Maria Shriver
The outgoing first lady of California leaves office with a dominating Crown performance. "Amazing hair," praised one supporter.
Shriver 41 percent, Christine O'Donnell 27%, Rola Dashti 23%, Mary Bono Mack 4%, Teresa Tomlinson 2%.
BEST HAIR IN SPORTS REPORTING: Erin Andrews
It's a "triple Crown" performance for the ESPN reporter - and perhaps a changing of the guard, as she prevents the all-time Crown champion from winning an award for the ninth consecutive year.
Andrews 45 percent, Bonnie Bernstein 35%, Suzy Kolber 19%, Linda Cohn 1%.
SUPER-HAIR WARS CHAMPION HAIRSTYLE OF THE YEAR: Shenae Grimes.
This Crown which was awarded first may have led to a second for the 90210 actress. She won five matches in a row from the end of the regular season through the playoffs, with an average winning margin of 73 percent!
Crown winner Shenae Grimes definitely has beautiful hair!
Women everywhere, from actresses to Title Max employees, would love to have her style!
