The 2024 Hot List

#HotList

NAME: Dr. Daisy Dixon

WHO IS SHE: Art philosophy lecturer at Cardiff University in Wales

HER STYLE: Very long red sidepart, sometimes reaching her waist; our photo from her X/Twitter feed followed a recent four-inch cut with added waves

WHY WE LIKE IT: She's not afraid to let it grow, let it go and let it flow. The hair is seldom pinned, even in selfies from home. She'll use her ears for control if she must, yet she seems careful in general about keeping it in line. The fact that her Instagram account includes a "hair" tab with some slow-motion videos confirms it for us.

SUPER-HAIR? "This is Super-Hair!" the Hair Fan who suggested her declared in an email; "her hair is beautiful." We'll agree on the latter - and almost the former. At least one Instagram video shows it in her eyes for a moment. That video is captioned: "Long hair and exercise don't mix." For some people, it can. Could we watch her closely and offer some advice? [Posted 12.27.24]

NAME: Victoria Kjaer Theilvig

WHO IS SHE: Miss Universe 2024, representing Denmark; described by contest website as "world championship dancer" and "aspiring lawyer"

HER STYLE: Long with added waves, parted slightly off-center

WHY WE LIKE IT: We think the best hair won the November contest in Mexico (out of several great candidates). This style was stunning and perfect all evening - even when she had to take headphones on and off during a final round. It clearly was sprayed tightly, daring anyone or anything to try to move it. Photos and clips since she won the title show a looser look, but still well-controlled.

SUPER-HAIR? The pageant night was great. But we fear what was coming, and it happened on her personal X/Twitter feed in late November: a style shoot with hair in her eyes. We hoped she would resist that - but on the other hand, some Hair Fans might dream of doing this "takedown" themselves. How would you do that? [Posted 12.13.24]

NAME: Monica Mangin

WHO IS SHE: "Lifestyle expert" on Live With Kelly and Mark; chief executive of East Coast Creative production company in Philadelphia

HER STYLE: Medium-long, center-parted with adjustable added waves

WHY WE LIKE IT: This cover photo from Woman's World magazine at a checkout line was all it took. Strips of hair closest to her eyes are round-brushed back and probably sprayed into place. A light "photo shoot fan" shows off the waves even more than usual, without pushing the long hair back so far that we can't appreciate it. It's like she's running toward us and her Super-Hair won't be stopped.

SUPER-HAIR? In the studio, yes. Some appearances on TV display thick and spectacular flex. But in her flower garden, no - and we know this because she posted a "year-in-review" photo diary of that garden on Instagram. One of the photos shows a few strands across her left eye. But if she wants to run toward us - say, at the summer camp she owns - we hope she won't mind if we reach for the hair to stop her. [Posted 11.29.24]

NAME: Jessica Boyington

WHO IS SHE: Long-time TV traffic reporter in Philadelphia

HER STYLE: Currently showing on Instagram a medium-long sidepart with adjustable curl that we think is natural

WHY WE LIKE IT: "Great thickness and body," a Hair Fan wrote in nominating her. True. And when the curl is added to that, you have a bouncy style that still seems able to stay controlled even when she cracks up on the set (which seems to happen often). We actually think more curl is better for her, because it brings more overall control.

SUPER-HAIR? The "funny" side of her (check her Instagram bio) got a bit out of hand on TikTok in October when the northern lights became visible in her area. She let a wide strip of hair droop into her eye. So we must say no - but if Philly ever has a City League challenge round, she could give Kerri Corrado a serious test. [Posted 11.15.24]

NAME: Claire Huangci

WHO IS SHE: "World-famous pianist," her website says, based in Germany but originally from New York state; latest album is Made in USA

HER STYLE: She's had several, but we noticed a shoulder-length sidepart with bangs a bit shorter than our photo from a recent "docu-concert" on fellow classical pianist Lang Lang

WHY WE LIKE IT: Classical piano can be hard work, requiring intensity and precise focus in concerts. This hair is built for that - able to move and shake during dramatic moments of concertos. She has to bend down to play the keys, but the style doesn't get in her way when she does. She probably can't afford to have that happen, anyway - and it doesn't.

SUPER-HAIR? Tough one. She displays many pictures playing up her hair in motion - often at the brink, yet staying out of her eyes by a fraction. But we found one on Facebook where a strip of bangs was too long, covering her left eye. So we must say no - but if you have a chance to see her perform, go. [Posted 11.1.24]

NAME: Fiona Willan

WHO IS SHE: Political reporter for Sky News Australia

HER STYLE: Shoulder-length sidepart; no wave noticeable

WHY WE LIKE IT: We found this very professional look during a trip "down under." She likely uses light spray to keep her right side in position on camera, but not so much as to look plastered. A tiny bit of lift at the sidepart crown seems to offer support. If a breeze comes up, how strongly can it hold? That is the tension here - great for Hair Fans to admire.

SUPER-HAIR? Covering the news, perhaps. But our answer is no, because of a daring pin-up do she displayed at a "midwinter ball" - with curl sweeping down to cover her right eye. She's had other drops as well. Yet she reminds us of U.S. cable news anchor Martha MacCallum, who reached the top of Top Ten Tresses years ago. Should she stick to conservative politicians? [Posted 10.18.24]

NAME: Ashlee Lian

WHO IS SHE: Actress in the old TV series What Happens at the Abbey and the recent short movie Invisible Man 3; working with The Backyard Balcony grass delivery service in Los Angeles

HER STYLE: Based on this late August Instagram photo, medium-long with natural waves and teased at the top

WHY WE LIKE IT: The Hair Fan who found her told us she has "nice waves, good body and thickness." The top of the forehead is critical for keeping all that under control. We're guessing she uses some kind of mousse to do it. Photos she posted with her acting roles in the 2010s showed off the thickness better, while the hair was placed invitingly close to her eyes.

SUPER-HAIR? Nope. Dig deep into her Instagram account and you'll find a 2018 photo of lush longer hair covering an eye. But we can't blame Hair Fans for wanting to get their hands on a style like this. Since she seems more focused these days on grass for dogs, that could be hard; first she'd throw dirt in your eyes, then she could release the hounds - all for hair defense. Approach at your own risk. [Posted 10.4.24]

NAME: Molly McNearney (Kimmel)

WHO IS SHE: Writer/Executive Producer/Wife of Star for Jimmy Kimmel Live

HER STYLE: It's been longer, but she appeared at the 2024 Emmy Awards with a chin-length bob that has added wave and perhaps slightly flipped ends

WHY WE LIKE IT: The wave at about mouth-level makes the difference here. A basic sideparted bob normally has nothing to keep it from dropping in a woman's eye, so tuckbacks are common. But in this case, we suspect the wave is sprayed to create something stronger and more solid. It worked for her, as the hair could be flexible yet stay mainly in place.

SUPER-HAIR? This look almost made our ballot for the best style of the show - ousted by an actress who appeared in the final minutes. In fact, we found nothing to indicate any of her styles have collapsed. Maybe if we paid off Guillermo the guard...? [Posted 9.20.24]

NAME: Paige Drummond

WHO IS SHE: Ranch hand in Oklahoma, though she claims Dallas is home; daughter of "Pioneer Woman"/entrepreneur Ree Drummond

HER STYLE: Currently very long, center-parted (or close to it) with added waves

WHY WE LIKE IT: This woman is sure to get Hair Fans' attention at the county fair or rodeo, and not only because her shade is bright blonde. It might be in a ponytail while she's doing chores, but when it's let loose she almost dares onlookers to give it a close look (if not more). She must do something to the left side of the style, because she tilts her head to her right for photos often without a collapse. (Is it oil, or something else?)

SUPER-HAIR? It's close, but we're saying no. A couple of social media photos seem to show the left side dropping an inch too far into her eye. But she's proof great hair can run in families - even if Mom's style seems to be stronger. [Posted 9.6.24]

NAME: Debra Alfarone

WHO IS SHE: Anchor for Gray Television's "Local News Now" streaming service; speaking coach and podcast host

HER STYLE: Medium-long sidepart swept over the crown with added waves

WHY WE LIKE IT: This style beautifully makes Hair Fans change their focus. Our vidcap from a preview of the April 2024 solar eclipse shows a tempting S-curl near her right eye. But to do something to that curl, you'll probably have to break through the combed-over crown (likely supported with spray). The curl-crown combination results in a right side that can bounce when touched, but strongly stops there.

SUPER-HAIR? While this style is tough, we must say no. An Instagram post from April 2023 shows no S-curl at all with hair covering an eye. It probably was taken at home. We'd be thrilled to see her hair at its best, back at her old stomping ground of The White House with a breeze blowing. [Posted 8.23.24]

NAME: Jasmine Tookes

WHO IS SHE: Fashion model based in California; former "angel" for Victoria's Secret

HER STYLE: Medium-long, parted slightly off-center, normally straight but perhaps naturally curly

WHY WE LIKE IT: This head of hair can be styled many ways, and on her many of the styles look great. An InStyle photo spread for the Paris Olympics showed the hair mostly sleek and elegant, but leaving you wishing for a breeze to push it off her ears and shoulders. Yet if that happened, the thickness of her hair would take over so it still looks tremendous even if slightly messy.

SUPER-HAIR? Unlike some supermodels of the past, we must say no. She's openly posed with a strip of hair in an eye, and even posted a video playfully throwing her curls around. Yet she's become this generation's version of Ultimate 50 member Naomi Campbell - a Black model with hair we want to see unleashed often. [Posted 8.9.24]

NAME: Lily O'Shea Becker

WHO IS SHE: TV news reporter in Kansas City

HER STYLE: Mid-length straight center-part; she seems to prefer the look in our vidcap, with sections tucked behind the ears

WHY WE LIKE IT: This looks so complex that it calls for analysis. Tiny strips closest to the forehead frame her face. Then wider segments go behind the ears, with long hair both outside and inside them. The result is a tuck-back nestled in protection (as in ears well-hidden), yet looking like the slightest touch will bring disaster. At its best, this is a soft-looking, beauty-before-business style that probably holds better than you'd expect.

SUPER-HAIR? We haven't seen her much, but we doubt it. She's had evenings when hair has fallen off an ear (peraps revealing it's sprayed) and the closest strands almost have blown into her eyes. But the Kansas City area has a history of impressive strong styles, from Anne Peterson and Laurie Everett to Meredith Hoenes. So we give her credit for trying to break the "TV mold" with something Hair Fans really would want to watch. [Posted 7.26.24]

NAME: Ella Purnell

WHO IS SHE: Actress appearing in TV series such as Fallout and TV movies such as Sweetpea

HER STYLE: She changes it often, but we were struck by this promotional photo for Fallout with mid-length straight hair and what appears to be "curtain bangs"

WHY WE LIKE IT: The bangs were shorter in other roles she's played. Here, they're cut at angles on either side so the shortest ones don't dip below her eyebrows. But the tension here comes in trying to bring the longer strands in for a collapse. The bangs don't seem to be sprayed, so they're very vulnerable.

SUPER-HAIR? Spoiler alert... no. Vidcaps of Fallout posted online show a breeze bringing the long bangs and even her longer hair to the front, practically flipping the hair into her face. We can't imagine the eyes (our standard for a fall) escaped that. But if she's looking for a battle from this photo, many Hair Fans probably are ready to provide one. [Posted 7.12.24]

NAME: Jules Breach

WHO IS SHE: Studio host for Fox Sports at the "Euro2024" soccer tournament (please do not confuse it with the Super-Hair EuroCup); formerly with Channel 4 and TNT Sports in Britain

HER STYLE: Bust-length with natural or added light waves

WHY WE LIKE IT: This hair can be as well-conditioned as any soccer star. In a thick mode like this studio pose, she seems ready to take on all challengers for as long as 90 minutes. Tuckbacks behind the ears can bail her out, but she doesn't seem to do that with her hair a lot.

SUPER-HAIR? Officially, yes; we found no signs of a drop in a photo search. But we give her a yellow card, because she's clearly had some narrow escapes in Britain. She's so high-risk that we think the woman she replaced, Kate Abdo (see below), could beat her in a Super-Hair War. Can Netflix schedule something like that for us, the way it's doing for hot dog eating? [Posted 6.28.24]

NAME: Victoria Monet

WHO IS SHE: R&B singer of songs such as Alright

HER STYLE: Her real length could be debated, but we think it's the one in our photo from Naturally Curly - teased back into a long pseudo-sidepart with curls

WHY WE LIKE IT: The more you look at these curls, the closer you want to get to them. Some strands have three full curly twists to savor. She has good reason to put them on display in videos and photo shoots. But the teasing at the crown (and perhaps added mousse?) is critical for control; with so much hair, the forehead has to stay as clear as possible. But Hair Fans who are too easily distrcted by curls won't think to challenge that area of the style.

SUPER-HAIR? We were hoping - but then we watched the steamy video for her song Party Girls. Her long hair flipped into her eyes more than once. That leaves her... well, you know... "out of the Monet" with us. [Posted 6.14.24]

NAME: Masih Alinejad

WHO IS SHE: Iranian-born journalist and frequent critic of the Muslim government; World Liberty Congress President; author of book The Wind in My Hair

HER STYLE: Big natural ccrls, currently trimmed at the shoulders; straight looks on rare occasions (we'll overlook the flower pin, which she wears a lot)

WHY WE LIKE IT: One program called her "the woman whose hair frightens Iran." But she brought in a Hair Fan on X/Twitter with a lot of teasing on top (perhaps with a pick, 1970s-style) and well-hidden bangs at times. That wind can blow at it, but the strands always seem to either stop short of her eyes or go around them.

SUPER-HAIR? That's what our Hair Fan asked us. Our answer: from what we could find, yes - but she's had a few very close escapes. To be honest, she might not care if the hair falls in her eyes or not. Yet anyone who supports women removing hijabs and showing their hairstyles in public is bound to get Hair Fan support. [Posted 5.31.24]

NAME: Lauree Austin (best known simply by her first name)

WHO IS SHE: Midday host at the Christian radio network K-Love

HER STYLE: Mid-length and center-parted; curls added on occasion

WHY WE LIKE IT: Based on her Instagram photos, she doesn't pin down her hair as much as you'd expect a radio personality to do. She lets the body in her styles come out, and we understand why. It's impressive - flexing a little at times, bouncy at others. This is one case where we think added curl (as opposed to round-brusing) gets in the way of her best look.

SUPER-HAIR? Nope. While it's often attractive, that same Instagram account reveals she lets it fall in her eyes from time to time. But we think she's a fine debunker of the old joke about having a "face for radio." [Posted 5.17.24]

NAME: Ashley Cooke

WHO IS SHE: Award-winning country music singer; nominee on our site for best hair at CMT Music Awards 2024 (left)

HER STYLE: Long and naturally wavy, although curl appears added at times; part can vary but usually is off-center

WHY WE LIKE IT: The only hairspray this country star seems to use comes when she's nominated for an award. It's not around the eyes, but to support curl near the ends. This is a case where the bottom half of the style often supports the top, not the other way around. The result is a look that flexes around her face, without dropping in it.

SUPER-HAIR? We found no evidence of a collapse, so we'll give her a tentative yes. But we wonder how this hair would fare in a lengthy outdoor concert - and we certainly would want to watch. Does her style have a 1-24 scale, based on how many songs she sings from her album? [Posted 5.3.24]

NAME: Kate Abdo

WHO IS SHE: Studio host for CBS Sports soccer coverage, such as the UEFA Champions League

HER STYLE: Long sidepart with natural waves which she sometimes straightens

WHY WE LIKE IT: If you don't understand what the other people at the desk are discussing, she can keep Hair Fans interested by simply waiting for her close-ups. For those who like ponytails, she displays them often. And long-time stylist Kari-Anne Habbershaw has a photographic how-to about one of her wavy looks... from the back. She's more into using shoulders than ears for control, both in and out of the studio.

SUPER-HAIR? We lean toward saying no, based on an appearance in March 2023 (documented on her Instagram) showing curl down the bridge of her nose. But she's posted plenty of videos training in a boxing ring that we'd delight in going toe-to-toe to settle the issue. [Posted 4.22.24]

NAME: Krystyna Pyszkova (using the contest's spelling)

WHO IS SHE: Miss World 2023-24, representing Czech Republic (Czechia); model and law student

HER STYLE: We say her best look is her crowning look: medium-long with cascading, apparently added waves (but she's been straighter as well)

WHY WE LIKE IT: One Hair Fan told us she has "great body, color... seems soft and silky." All true - but we think the key word there is seems. That perfect look probably comes with heat from an iron - especially round-brushed sides to steer hair off her face. Most of the top of the style probably is locked down with spray. But we wouldn't be surprised if there's also some below the shoulders, should the top section weaken.

SUPER-HAIR? As much as we want to say yes, we cannot. An invitation to a "meet and greet" in Manila in December 2023 showed her right side pushed in a few millimeters too far. Except for that, the hair was fabulous - and we think that's how Hair Fans would want to approach her. The straight styles are vulnerable. But pursuing a "Super" look is more challenging, but a lot more fun. [Posted 4.5.24]

NAME: Kristina Pink

WHO IS SHE: Sideline reporter for Fox Sports and Los Angeles Clippers

HER STYLE: When we saw it, shulder-length sidepart with rounded ends; it's been a few inches longer

WHY WE LIKE IT: When we saw her at the Big East men's basketball finals, her look reminded us a lot of Lisa Salters at rival ESPN. It's about as long, but a but thicker and plumper. She can tuck hair behind the ears if she must, and it appeared necessary at times because the right side comes very close to collapse.

SUPER-HAIR? From what we can tell, she has it. And if she's trying to look like Salters, that's fine by us because Salters ia an Ultimate 50 member. But this sets up a potential showdown that many Hair Fans would want to see. Pink has more thickness and narrow escape. Salters has more solid hold and decades of experience. Who's your pick? [Posted 3.22.24]

NAME: Kiley Rodrigues

WHO IS SHE: Graduate assistant golf coach at Northern Arizona University; masters student in communication (formerly at Arkansas State); golf instructor in western Ontario

HER STYLE: We'd call it a shaggy sidepart - medium-long, combed back on her right side and over on the left (trimmed several inches from recent seasons)

WHY WE LIKE IT: A Hair Fan suggested her for Best Manes on Campus, but we decided to keep coaches away from there. Here, she dares you to come after all her thickness - yet we suspect the crown is well-sprayed to keep the hair in position. Too much movement probably is trouble for her. But she was top-of-class in grades (albeit with a flatter and safer look), so she probably knows ways to outsmart risky situations.

SUPER-HAIR? On the course, she ties the hair back. Understandably. With this look... well, she's in Flagstaff, which is known for strong winds. We have our doubts about this style holding, especially since it was practically down in her senior picture. Yet we imagine many Hair Fans would follow her for 18 holes to find out for sure. [Posted 3.8.24]

NAME: Vikki Ziegler

WHO IS SHE: Divorce attorney based in the New Jersey suburbs of New York City; regular legal "expert" on TV shows and podcasts

HER STYLE: Medium-long, parted off-center, likely straight but wave sometimes added

WHY WE LIKE IT: We saw her on a TMZ documentary and stopped to pay attention. This attorney presents evidence that her styling is attractively carefree. But the investigative side of us suspects better - and sure enough: her personal website shows she has a side hustle selling "luxury hair perfume." It might provide just enough added oil to keep everything in a perfect position.

SUPER-HAIR? We, the jury, in this matter find that she has it. Our search found only one of two weak moments on camera. We're apparently very late in discovering this woman, but we thank TMZ for making our hair senses go bum-buh-BOOM. [Posted 2.23.24]

NAME: Jeanette Schock

WHO IS SHE: Actress/writer/producer, appearing in the movie Place of Bones and the upcoming A King's Prayer

HER STYLE: Red and mid-length with a variety of looks; the Hair Fan who nominated her suggested this Instagram photo with "great thick curls"

WHY WE LIKE IT: While her acting roles may be supporting, hair like this is bound to get attention. She's not afraid to wear it close to her eyes, as if she relies on a "mess" of curls to combine for hold. Beyond a bit of teasing around the partline, we don't see much else in protective measures.

SUPER-HAIR? Sorry, she's not. While she's had one or two movie scenes where shorter "bangs" seem to save her style, a 2021 Instagram post clearly has a strip of curl in her left eye. We like her inspirational quotes, though - and we can understand why curl-lovers might consider her mane miraculous. [Posted 2.9.24]

NAME: Dr. Jessica Dain

WHO IS SHE: Superintendent of Piper School District in suburban Kansas City, KS

HER STYLE: Short sidepart with sweeping bangs across the forehead

WHY WE LIKE IT: It's all about the sweep. If it fails, the style probably drops in her eyes in a mess. But from what we've found, this academic knows how to keep it holding strongly. Maybe it's spray; maybe it's a hot-iron curl. Whatever she does, one remarkable Facebook video where she cheers for the football Chiefs showed her jumping with the style at the absolute brink, but with perfect hold.

SUPER-HAIR? She gets an A+ grade from us. Other Chief fans can have Taylor Swift; we're taking this woman (well, she's married and a mother of three) for schoolroom hair as impressive and stunning as any we've seen in a long time. She's been declared a national "Superintendent to watch," and we think many Hair Fans would happily agree. [Posted 1.26.24]

NAME: Ayo Edebiri

WHO IS SHE: Award-winning actress, especially for her role in the TV series The Bear

HER STYLE: We're assuming her best real style is what she showed while accepting a Golden Globe Award - a blunt-cut bob stopping slightly above the shoulders

WHY WE LIKE IT: This is a simple look, but the challenge comes in keeping it in line. She and her team made it look "fye" (to borrow from Vogue) with a slight bit of flip at the ends. We wonder if oil was added to make the hair sleek, but not too slick. While she put the hair behind her ears for safety while on stage, it appeared well-controlled without that thanks to the subtle extras.

SUPER-HAIR? We think it is, because she can change it to fit the situation. She wears long extensions on her TV show, and can "go natural" with curls at times as well. We admittedly passed over her for our "Best Hair" ballot at the Golden Globes because other women struck us as more daring. But some Hair Fans will tell you we've been wrong before.
